Story Ocean

This follows the thoughts of one of my characters as he goes to see the ocean for the first time. Louise is the one leading him there.

"Okay. We're almost there. I am fifteen and I'm about to see the ocean for the first time.

Yep. Calm down. Be a man. No tears. You can do this with grace.

Ouch. That stick was sharp. Great, Louise is laughing at my clumsiness. So much for grace.

The air. The air is.... salty. But Louise said the water is as well, so that makes sense. I can feel the salt in the wind sticking on my face. It smells like... I don't know. Fish?

The wind is so cold. And fresh. Fresher than spring in the hills of my home land. But at the same time kind of gross.

My heart is beating so fast...

Water that stretches rather than the eyes can see? Every drop full of salt? Nonsense. No such thing. But we are almost there...

Just over this hill. I have never seen this kind of grass before. Oh, and it's quite sharp.

What's that crashing sound? Sounds like the tiny waves on the lake on a windy day. Louise said it's the giant waves along the beach. Mhm...

The sound is so loud. So consistent. So comforting...

...and I tripped again. And I'm giggling like a little school girl. Argh.

BUT IM SO EXCITED.

Almost to the top. And--

Woah. Oh. Woah. There it is. I...I...

T-The ocean? The sea?

I-Is that...?

Every shade of blue and green possible. Perfect crests that reflect the sunlight into glistening strips.

What is running down my face?

The sand is so wonderfully rough in my hands.

Just a little farther--

The waves... The waves... So cold... The water is so cold. And wonderful.

So this is paradise."
