Here's my submission for the dankest of maps.





From the very start, I knew I wanted a small CTF map. Smaller maps, as seen in Blackout and similar ones, promote exciting, fast-paced gameplay that veterans and newbies alike can enjoy. For that reason I opted to keep it the minimum possible size, 100x100 blocks (It’s actually 101 by 101 so that I can work with defined lines of symmetry, but that shouldn’t make too much of a difference). This said, smaller maps can make games too short if wrongly designed, so I’ve made it as hilly as possible to slow players down a bit – and, of course, I’ve lined the sides of the middle valley with coal to prevent soldier from being overpowered.





Every CTF mapmaker knows that you can’t go wrong with two castles and a river, which is what I’ve done here, but I wanted to make it a little different so that it would stand out from the crowd. I thought that the best way of doing this would be to experiment with some new, never-seen-before block palettes. I’ve found birch and stone brick to work very well, and my most recent map, a Blackout rework, used cyan and orange rather than blue and red, which worked really nicely. For this map I went slightly more adventurous, but still came up with a palette I liked: rainbow.





This evidently left me with a few problems; namely, the use of the two main spawn blocks (netherrack and lapis) and the fact that it would be difficult to tell which side of the map you were on. For the first problem, I simply decided to use lava and webs for the red and blue spawns respectively. This would mean that I couldn’t use either block in the map, but I decided that I probably wouldn’t need to use them anyway. The spawns themselves are Brutalist-themed hot air balloons floating high above the map – it’s always nice to see some culture in Minecraft from time to time!





As for the second problem, that was easily sorted when approaching the design of the castles: by making them entirely red and blue, and viewable from every corner of the map, it became obvious which side was which. Having opted for the Brutalist approach to the spawn, I decided to go for a sleeker, more Modernist shape for the flag building. It can be accessed by the chimney at the tip, or by the two pods at the bottom. The flag building boasts several ways up – vines, sponges, water and even a ladder parkour.





For a more natural feel to the map, I varied the terrain a little using the sphere brush, then overlayed the entire map with various plants. Of course, there are sponges for the sake of mobility and pockets of water to reduce the OP-ness of Pyro, as well as several dank memes (aided by @paladinknight).
