This will be a little long so I will link the files in imgur instead of here.

Lesson 1. Slabs - you can put any light source under slabs but it dulls he effect it is a very cool looking detail that can add detail to any map. (Stairs also work)

    Image 1

Lesson 2. Snow - Snowblocks and snow are different in a few ways but the best one is snow blocks and stacked snow are the same look but stacked snow can emit light if light is under or beside it
The snow on the right is regular left is stacked.

Lesson 3. Glass/Stairs - You can put stairs and glass in front of light that works as a good alernative to torches.

    Images 10,11

Lesson 4. Torches - Just plain torches are a little ugly so you can make them a little better by putting an Item frame behind the torch and put in a block. Good blocks to use: Iron trapdoor, Anvil, Black (or other) banners, sideways fences, carpet, slabs.

Lesson 5. Lamps - Lamps look better than torches and Are flush with the wall good for anything.

    Image 17, redstone for show

Lesson 6. Hiding light sometimes you don't need the light to be seen so keep i under a carpet. (Pro tip make a giant one color floor with World edit or however and get a map make the map full of the color or design and put in item frame this can also work as paint). Pistons are basically glass but not clear it will cover up light and still produce it.

Image 21, 16 forgot pics of item frame thing :/

Lesson 7. Trapdoors - Iron and Wood trapdoors can be used to semi mask lighting they can be on the sides top or bottom if you use world edit you can add them on all sides of blocks.

    Images 22,23,24

Lesson 8. Dim - You can use redstone torches to dim areas works great if you want to make something spooky or just the aesthetic.

    Image 25

Lesson X. With world edit you can do //fast to make things with redstone stay litten without a source just add then remove the source.

Thanks To Quinox_ with some inspiration and help.
