My dad and myself had an argument the other day about which genre of music took more talent to write, perform, etc. We came to the agreement that people that know how to use instruments, write lyrical music, etc. (rock, metal, etc.) are the people who are easily more talented than any kind of music created today(trap, dubstep, pop, etc.).

He then said that the people who makes that music aren't "talented" musicians. These type of people didn't grow up writing their own music, spending years playing instruments, etc. rather than creating sounds on a computer. Anyone can really do that, to be honest. While playing a real instrument takes talent, practice, etc.

Generally I agree with him in all fields except the "no talent" thing, but other people would say it takes just as much talent. Let me know what you guys think and maybe we can get a debate going.

Well, I can see where you both are coming from, however do you have any experience with creating electronic music?

After buying one of the industry leading tools for creating music called FL Stuido, like you thinking that it would be a walk in the park, since I have 7 years of learning piano under my belt, but boy was I met with a whole other thing. Of course to create electronic music you still need some pretty decent understanding of all things to do with chords, timing, etc which you can learn with an instrument. As well as this, using synthesizers is an extremely hard thing to learn, and it took me over a good 2 months to learn only the most basic ways of how they work.

Overall electronic music in my opinion is slightly easier to make, however I think it would be quite an exaggeration that it doesn't take any talent to create electronic music. Many people who create electronic music and submit it to Monstercat for example have said that they grew up learning how music works and then started creating electronic music from there. It's harder than you would think it is.

Yes, anyone with understanding can create electronic music.
But you need to be talented to make good electronic music.

As a kid who plays piano, my experience with classical music tells me that it will be listened to for generations and will last almost forever. After all, most classical pieces were written by the prodigies like Mozart and Chopin. It is kinda boring to listen to I should say but nothing beats the classics in the talent of writing.

    I mean

Jazz improv tho. Composing on the spot. That's pretty hard to top.

Tbh composing for an ensemble goes to Classic, while individual composing (solos) goes to jazz.

But no electronic music will never beat Mozart or Davis.

I can see where you both are coming from......

Many musicians have professional song writers. That said, I think anyone that creates, writes, and plays their own instruments (whatever they are) are more talented than others who say buy a song and then just lipsync to some dance moves...

I like my music "old school" and raw. I've found it suits my personality and pumps me up.

    Rock on!

I would agree with the statement of "anyone can create electronic music" and that doesn't mean that it is good or that people would want to buy it.

It takes a "special" talent to write, create, and play music that becomes a national sensation and that people want to spend money buying..

But you don't know what they've done or not done, unless you know that person on more of a personal level.

I can almost guarantee you that people who make electronic music do not put in nearly the time and effort that instrumental players do. My older brother, a junior in college, practices trumpet anywhere from 3-4 hours per day, excluding the playing he does at school.
