The wind blew across the frozen tundra, creating ripples in the coarse stalks of grass and making the snow and ice cut its way through the cold. The air carried a sense of loneliness and desolation, but to Crystal it also brought with it a sense of home. She and her brother Night stood on a hill overlooking the valley where Caribou roamed. It didn't take long for Crystal's sharp eyes to pick out an older Caribou with a limp. She turned to her brother and gave a few short, soft barks and watched as he tore away back towards the woods behind them. Looking back at her prey, her mouth began to water and she licked her lips in expectation. They needed this meal. Winter was upon them so it wouldn't be long before all their food sources either migrated or went into hiding during the next couple of moon cycles.
Suddenly, the pack leader, Tracker, was next to her. He looked down at the valley and Crystal, with a flick of her head, pointed out the target. He gave a nod and briskly trotted towards the forest. Soon the sparse undergrowth rustled and 7 pack members stalked out. They kept low to the ground, careful not to make any noise that would disturb the herd below them. The pack leader split the group in half and told each wolf the plan. Then he smiled in the only way a wolf can smile. Suddenly the entire atmosphere changed. Silvery coats bristled, amber eyes twinkled mischievously, the air was charged; this was the moment before the hunt! Tracker looked up to Crystal with absolute trust and she nodded back. She knew her part. He turned, barked a few times, then swiftly led his team down the far left side of the valley. Runner, the second in command, led her team down the other side. Crystal stood on her perch and thanked the Great Moon Spirit that the scents of her and her hunting group were not being carried to the Caribou. Night padded up beside her and as they looked out over the frozen landscape he breathed deeply.
"Are you going to do it?" his voice sounded young; boyish. Crystal looked down at her hands. It was cold and her fingers were turning blue, but this was worth it. She focused and a wind picked up. Her eyes closed and her head was tilted back up towards the sky. The wind whipped up, tossing her blond hair all around and creating a massive snow storm. From beside her, Night waited for the signal. It was at that moment that Crystal opened her eyes, showing an icy pool of blue. In a voice like a whisper on the wind she said,
"Go". Night reacted instantly. Raising his head, his dark brown eyes narrowed against the storm and his black hair a tangled mess, he howled and his voice echoed down to the regiments below. The resounding sounds of the other members' howls echoed back up to them. This was what they were useful for. They couldn't hunt and they couldn't kill. That was the other members' job. Night looked at Crystal, who had stopped her magic. She began to fall and he caught her. No, this was all they could do to help the pack, for they were only human.
