Back in minecraft 1.7 you could block-hit which lessened the amount of damage you take, helping new players who didn't know how to soup well fight. However, now I can often kill a lot of players in HG who have no armor by simply doing crits on them with a stone sword. When I fight them in the pregame though, they do fine due to the iron armor's protection. Since block-hitting is no longer a thing, I think swords should do .5-1.5 less hearts of damage to a player. To help balance this out, the armor protection could be lessened a bit, which will also make full irons a lot easier to fight with just a stone sword. As an added benefit, teams with equal gear will be easier to fight because they will not deal insane damage to you.

This is a good idea but this basically means that technically every time you hit the other person is blocking

Blocking reduces 50% of the damage taken, this just reduces it by a heart or so. It is intended to make souping easier to learn for new players.

I think it should just be reduced by half a heart overall, crits and sword base damage. That's good enough

Just saying, blockhitting is exactly the same as it was in 1.7. The only difference is the animation. Aside from that, the damage reduced and mechanics of blockhitting are exactly the same.

Blockhitting is the same if you know what you're doing. However, this modification is mostly aimed towards new players who don't even know what block-hitting is.

Yes, but your original point stated that 1.7 blockhitting helped newer players. The reality of this is that if that was true 1.8 blockhitting would do the same due to the change being only visual. I am not contradicting your proposal, just pointing out a fallacy in your argument.

Newer players think that block-hitting is removed, so they don't try it. Explaining it to them takes way too long anyway.

If you look at 0:15 on the 1.8 footage, you can see that not only is the blockhitting animation removed, the screen also zooms in and out as if I am going out of sprint mode then back to sprint mode. If you look at the 1.7 footage, there is no zooming in and out.

This means that the game is no longer registering myself clicking both buttons at the same time as myself clicking both buttons at the same time. It is registering which one is ahead by the milliseconds, and registering that first, then it switches to the next one.

That being said, I find it hard to believe that blockhitting is still in Minecraft, if Minecraft doesn't even register right and left click at the same time as being right click and left click at the same time (otherwise known as blockhitting), on top of removing the animation.

Even so, it's not as if blockhitting is completely gone - you're blocking in between hits so you take half damage then. But you don't attack while taking half damage at the exact same time anymore. At least according to my footage.
