I need help compiling source code

I am a complete newb when it comes to this subject, so please bear with me. Even though I'm a newb at something like this, I do like to figure things out on my own, make mistake after mistake in order to learn, but after way too long of reading tutorial after tutorial and plenty of threads, I'm in need of help.

• I've cloned the repository
• I've downloaded Visual Studio, among the other (probably) useless programs that I now know I don't need.
• I have a very basic understanding of the tools needed in order to make this work, which is probably why I'm currently stuck.

I'm currently stuck at typing the command cmake -G "generator" (Visual Studio 14 2015 in my case). It says "Unknown c compiler" and I'm getting the error "CMakelistfiles.txt is nowhere to be found". There IS a CMakelistfiles.txt in the directory I'm doing all this. I have no clue what other info I need to give to make this easier for you to help me. :/

If doing this over teamspeak, skype or something would make things easier, please let me know. Thanks in advance..this was starting to make my head explode.
