Lets face it, so many people get arrested on Wild West for self defense, as can be seen here: https://www.brawl.com/threads/55357/. There generally isn't really time to call a sheriff then wait for the sheriff to arrive, so they have to fight, and if they do win then THEY get arrested.

The Solution: We need some sort of bot (NOT NAMED BRAWL-BOT!) to detect who was the first player to attack. In the average situation (EX: One player mining, another comes up behind and attacks) this would be plenty. The player who was just minding their own business wouldn't be wanted for killing them but if the attacker did kill they would then get a bounty. However, this would not work for more complicated situations (EX: One player is mining, another enters the mine and starts chasing the first player, however the second player ends up landing the first hit). One solution to this would be to just notify people in the tutorial that if they want it to count as self-defense, they have to not be the first to attack. However, then the attacker could count it as self defense. The other solution would be to have an internal timer (2 or 3 seconds?) that displays above the player's hot-bar (like processing does). If they retaliate during this time, then it is not considered self-defense and both players receive a bounty raise. If the person being attacked has a bounty already, it would never be considered self-defense.

I am completely open to ideas here! I am probably forgetting something, so if I am point it out, I would rather be corrected then look like a moron xD.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post! I hope these ideas can help make the server a better, more enjoyable place!

P.S: If anyone is interested in hearing my take on how Tobacco was legal in the wild west and how we could incorporate that but still keep it a drug, or my opinions on the ticketing system, let me know here! I would be glad to post it in the same format as this and my Legal Overhaul idea (which has already been denied by Roke, but is still a good read) if people would find it interesting or informational!

Another 2 VERY small recommendations: Add https://www.brawl.com/threads/53579/ to the in-game FAQ and put the horse calling as a status bar like processing

Yes, it would be great if sheriffs could know who started the fight.

This seems like a good idea, but I have a few suggestions. One is that it doesn't display the location of the fight, maybe just a chat message that says, " (player) attacked (player)" I think that saying their exact location is a little op, because others would know where they are.
Oh, and were you thinking of this as a sheriff's tool or would it be available to all players? Another thing is that when would be the limit at which it would send a chat message? Sometimes you accidentally punch players, would it send a message?

Oh gosh. With the ncp's and the reports and now the spam of <name> attacked <name> it would be ridiculous. However, i don't see anyway around it right now. I like the idea. My suggestion would be to only send this message to sheriff's though.

The message would be sent to just sheriffs and the player's who are involved. I never said it would say the location, but that might actually be good for sheriffs, but just a general area (Near Shaniko, Near the Poppy field, In the wilderness (when not near anything) etc.) As a way to handle the accidental punch, maybe during the 3 seconds, the person who got attacked could type a command (like /forgive, which is short) to forgive the other person and cancel the timer. I do think it could get a little spammy, but really nothing can be done about that beyond maybe if the same person was in 2+ different fights within, say, 30 seconds, it wouldn't say it again, or would say something like "<name> continued to fight other players! Pausing warnings for 30 seconds." as to make it so in the case of a group fight minimal messages are sent to sheriffs.

Well let's just use the US law system!
If a sheriff can't proof it he can't do sh*t. (rhymes)

Here's an example how the courtsystem works in the US:

And if this isn't a solution, the shoot-on-sight principal could also go with Sheriffs if you think they'll arrest you.
