WarZ Literature - Part 3



It was a long night. I didn't sleep a wink. Outside the 4x4 a vast mist had formed over the field. I sat up and turned round. 'You awake Ritzy?' I asked.
'Yeah.' Ritzy replied quietly, as he got up. 'Despite how tired I am, I can't sleep at all.' I watched him look out the window. 'Zombie nearby,' he said, 'Go take him out now or nah?'
'Nah,' I replied, 'it's like 3:15 AM. It's not like he can get in the car.' as I said this, we heard a sharp crack, followed by banging. 'What now?' Ritzy shouted, grabbing the first thing that came to hand, which happened to be my SPAS-24. We lay there quietly listening for a few moments as the banging grew slowly louder and more rapid. 'I guess we better check it out.' I whispered. I leaned down and picked up my Magnum, checking that it was loaded. 'I think maybe you should bring your MP5 instead of the SPAS, because I'd much rather I brought a gun I was more used to.'
'Oh yeah, here.' Ritzy muttered, looking sheepish. 'Do you have a knife?' Ritzy asked, whilst he picked up his MP5 and reloaded it. 'No,' I admitted, 'I didn't think about it very much.' Ritzy gave me a cold look and brought a combat knife out of his pocket. 'Well, I've got two. Take one.' he answered, throwing the weapon at me. I missed the catch and the knife dropped to the floor. Suddenly a large crack rippled through the car, freezing us solid. We looked up, to be met with the lifeless eyes of a infected, lying on the glass-top. 'God damn it!' Ritzy yelled, as the glass completely shattered and gave way. The zombie fell into the 4x4 and began scrabbling around, reaching for us. 'Oh my word!' I screamed, as the undead creature grabbed my leg and started pulling. I raised my Magnum and fired at the zombie, hitting it in the shoulder. Blood poured all over the seat, but the relentless zombie kept going. The zombie jumped on me and repeatedly tried to bite and scratch me. 'Flipping hell!' I shouted, as the zombie dribbled saliva all over my Kevlar. In the corner of my eye I saw Ritzy get up and walk forwards. The zombie suddenly stopped screaming and attacking me, and was still. I shoved it off me and looked at it. A large axe had been dropped on it's back, and pierced through it, almost slicing me too. I looked at Ritzy, thinking he was responsible for saving me, but he was staring up at the glass-top - or the shattered remains of it. 'What...?' I began, following his gaze. And there stood a man. He was staring down at us, covered in splatters of blood, which I presumed, and hoped, were from the infected rather than survivors. 'Who are you?' I asked him. My throat was still hoarse from being so close to death. 'Why did you save us?'
The man set his gaze upon me from Ritzy. 'I,' he replied slowly, 'am Roke. I don't know why I saved you. I would've been happy to just drop this axe on your friend,' he continued, nodding towards Ritzy, 'and let that zombie finish you off and take the last of your gear. But I didn't. God knows why.' This whole time Ritzy had been so shocked, and looking at him I saw he was beginning to pull things back together. 'R-R-Right.' He stuttered, 'Well, that gunshot probably alerted the infected to our location, so hop in I guess.' Ritzy pointed to the back seats. 'Any of those will be fine.' Roke nodded at Ritzy and jumped through the jagged pieces of glass and got into his seat. Ritzy turned the 4x4 on and pushed down hard on the accelerator. We were out of sight of our resting spot in less than a minute. I swivelled round and eyed Roke. He sat next to the zombie staring at it. I turned back around to Ritzy, 'Not sure about this Roke guy.' I said quietly. Ritzy nodded rather than talking, as he was still quite confused and surprised. ' I agree,' Ritzy answered, ' but he saved us. That's the most important right now. If we have a problem with him later we can deal with it.' I nodded and turned back to look at Roke. He was staring out of the window at the trees, humming to himself contently.
I set my gaze to the outside of the window too. We were passing over the bridge outside our town, heading towards the next one. When we entered the next town a few minutes later, I noticed what it had in common with the field and our town.

It was completely lifeless.
