So I've currently got an Acer Aspire V15 Nitr Black Edition laptop.
This is equipped with a 250 GB SSD, but otherwise the specs are the factory default. This is my current stuff as well: Screenshot (16).png Screenshot (18).png Screenshot (17).png If it's illegible:
    Intel i7 4720 HQ @ 2.60GHZ - 8 CPUs - 8GB RAM
    nVidia GeForce GTX 960M

So the issue I have is that despite it being a pretty fast laptop initself, it's starting to slow down. I've dusted it out, but the performance is weakening.
I've already checked and I could upgrade my RAM from 8 to 16 GB - the question I have to you IT-savvy peeps is, is that the right choice? I'd love to be able to run Far Cry 4 properly, and I have a very similar set-up to what this guy uses in his older videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5f-ChLiA0WiFnyx78miTOw/videos
EXCEPT he has a different Intel core. The only issue is, I have a laptop, and I've found out that the only core I could get is an i5 with only nominally better GHZ.

Anyone got a good solution? I'd really appreciate it :3

Have you run a memory diagnostic to see if memory is what the problem is?

Ummmmm how do I do that?

    nvm trying it now

    So it isn't a memory issue/memory leak.

Have you checked to make sure you arent using up too much of the cpu at once? Or that your graphics card can handle the games you're running?

It should be able to, there are people with worse cards that get better FPS.

Ok. Only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is to check canitrunit.com for compatabology to see if you can run far cry. It should tell you, if you cant, what's lacking.

8 GB of RAM should be enough for any game, especially because games mainly use the dedicated GDDR of the graphics card (with 6 GB, there is also enough of that). Unless you want to game with 30 tabs in Chrome in the background, it won't change the performance.
I don't know much about this dual graphics setup (Onboard graphics for lightweight tasks, dedicated graphics card for games), but is it possible that it did not switch to the GTX960M for games? The integrated intel graphics would of course struggle with actual games.

Hmm, might be an idea. I'm not sure how to set this though - I start my MC using that, and it works "OK" (120FPS), but I'm not sure how to do it for other games. I'll give it a shot anyways.

Why are you upgrading a laptop mobile CPU? Did you check to make sure it was a CPU bottleneck, and not a GPU one? Does your laptop easily open so that you can take out your CPU? Honestly, upgrading a laptop part sounds too painful even if you know what you're doing.

    1) How do I check a GPU bottleneck?
    2) I'm going to get it upgraded at a PC store near me, I've used them before anyways.

Look at usage in task manager while running a game with your 960M on. Is your CPU running at 100% when running a game, or is it less than 100%?

-> Less than 95-100%: That's a GPU bottleneck, and upgrading the CPU will do next to nothing for games.

-> At 95+% consistently: That's a CPU bottleneck. Your option may be worth it depending on pricing, or it might be best to consider investing in a new computer.

Try this out with multiple games, as some are more heavy on the CPU than others. Here are some benchmarks to also look at. Is your performance similar to those people, or not? If it is similar, it's just your parts are outdated.

edit: with the prices (1 and 2) those mobile CPUs you wanted have, you can easily build a high quality gaming PC.

Christ those prices are high, I thought this kind of thing would be affordable for the average gamer lol

Yeah I'll look into the GPU issue. I'm not sure if I should stick with my current set up, or sell it now and get a decent price for it ;/

Mobile CPUs have an insanely high premium attached to them because people don't upgrade laptops. Here is how your $800 laptop CPU compares to a desktop $300 CPU.
