Tracking is the key fundamental that allows Raid to function as a beefed up survival server. Being able to locate players' bases with the game's plugin has resulted in some exciting moments since 1.7. But such moments are becoming scarce as the player base inevitably trickles off to a small number. Trackers are unarguably a time consuming device and with a smaller player number it's becoming rare to see the hard work of creating a tracker pay off. Learning the current tracking system would also be nearly impossible without doing a fair amount of research on the subject which is discouraging for any new players. The general player base is looking for fast pace games with obvious rules. If tracking were to be simplified enough for newer players to engage in the activity I believe it could help revamp the server towards its glorious days.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simplified tracking may not be the only key ingredient to bringing players to the server but it would undoubtedly help catch the interest in new arrivals. A single piece of obsidian takes 2.55-9.2 seconds to mine depending on the diamond picaxe's efficiency level. The time it takes to gather 400 obsidian blocks for a generic 5,000x5,000 tracker lingers between 17-62 minutes in mining time alone. Assuming that someone's within the span of the tracker, it may take up to a few hours to pin the player's coordinates if they're continuously warping. The inefficiency of a basic tracker is the prime reason that many die hard players create stacked trackers. But making such a tracker requires dedication and know-how that new players will lack within their first week of joining the server (considering they stick around that long).
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The whole idea behind how trackers work is time consuming and confusing by itself. It's easy to do once you get the hang of it but getting to know how it functions and how to use it efficiently is a chore. Tracking basics typically require a close friend who can teach lessons or countless hours of trial and error through YouTube videos, Brawl's guides, and/or attempts on players's basses that typically aren't worth the effort. The initial time it takes to create a dependable tracker already makes tracking a first come- first served game mechanic since skilled players have the ability to wipe the board clean on reboot day. Tracking with the dependency on outside research makes it all the more discouraging for newcomers to stay on Raid.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Solution: I myself am open for any solutions, even if the community decides the solution is to make no changes. If changes are decided upon remember that available coders and approval would be needed to make this happen. We'd want to aim for solution that is coder friendly, user friendly, and appealing to newcomers. Feel welcomed to give some feedback on what you think is best in regards of the tracking mechanic. I've got some ideas but would like to hold them until multiple people formulate their own for us to explore.

Tracking is great how it is. It is supposed to require skill and knowledge, and I think dumbing down tracking will sacrifice the quality of the server.

Perhaps a more laid back approach with less risk, such as something similar to /f map? I find tracking difficult personally, not to mention that it takes up resources that could be expended elsewere.

No hate please, this is just my earnest opinion. Granted, I do seem to be intruding, but I mean no offense from this response. I'm speaking from the top of my head.

In fact, I can tell that at least 70% of Raid's player base don't track, not because they don't know how to (I have started a yt series regarding tracking) but because they don't want to. Most of the player base prefers to gather materials, farm, build, pvp, etc. Players like Graff, Trogs, Bluekaroo, Duso, etc, don't track at all, they just enjoy doing other stuff like the ones mentioned before.

Tracking has always been "complex" (I'm not sure if it's the best definition actually), requires time, dedication, knowledge and effort. But I don't think there is a way to make "tracking easier". However, there are multiple ways to make tracking easier to understand. Instead of modifying a feature that has been Raid's core for several years, we should (talking to all the experienced trackers) implement new ways to improve the learning curve by making videos, threads or helping in-game.

As much as I love tracking, this might be nescessary to make the learning curve more player friendly. I think it possible to find a balance between what the older, experienced trackers want, and what is need to make the learning curve a little lighter. I'm at school currently so I can't type up anything grandiose, however when I get home I will rack my brain and touch on this subject more in depth. I just thought I should get out my initial opinion while I can.

Agreeing with SpeedCell on this one. Instead of changing tracking, which will in fact backfire if done incorrectly proven by another unnamed server that tried changing tracking already and is currently dying, I instead feel we should get more available options for newer players to learn how to track. Tutorials in-game and on forums, videos, all that and make it widely available to newer players to choose to learn in whatever their preference is. This can be done with virtually any aspect of the game but with tracking it would probably help the most to make the learning curve less yet maintain the hardcore aspect of the game that so many players love.

Actually, Graff myself and a few others were trying to learn how to track but there aren't any good tutorials.

I plan on making a couple tutorials once the tracking plugin is fixed. The only thing I may not do is explain full-map tracking as that would make tracking too ez. I'll also release a program that greatly simplifies calculating coordinates.

I made a video regarding the basics of tracking. (I know, it's not the best and my accent doesn't help either) I believe it would help you a little bit if you are starting from scratch. I'll be uploading the second part tomorrow.

A year ago when I started tracking, I asked a dozen of people (even 2 staffmembers) if they can help me to learn tracking but anyone I asked told me the same bull**** like go to the forums watch videos or you have to find it out on your own, what i finally did (after i mined all alone 4 dubs of obby to build massive trackers . But noone thought that it was worth the effort teaching me.
I think most players who know how to track are too narrow minded. They dont get it, that if there are no new players who learn tracking, that someday (now for example ) there are no more "trackers" left ( old ones quit ).
My suggestion is that experienced players should try to teach new players

Even as a staff member, it is extremely difficult and time consuming to teach someone. Additionally, most players aren't comfortable with other players coming to their trackers to teach them, for obvious reasons. If a refined tutorial video can be made, that would be the best option.

The wiki is pretty good tbh, I learnt how to track from that. I think Melvin wrote that if I'm not wrong

To be honest, I just read what the server sent me, it wasn't hard to learn at all.

Although tracking isn't that hard to learn I still think it could be made more simpler to get started on it quicker

So I don't track- I wander getting resources/XP to sell, and raid surface/poorly hidden bases.

With build having trackers it's quite easy, I have teached multiple newcomers how to track. It's not that time consuming. Send them to @Speedcell's tutorial and you're done.
