I read somewhere (from a reliable source, though I completely forgot what) that people who are good at math can more accurately judge the power and trajectory to get an object from one place to another; say, throwing a football, or in this case, shooting a virtual bow.

I'm aware that being good at math has nothing to do with the strength it takes to hurl a football a long distance, or the hand-eye coordination required to be a skilled archer, but the idea is that when estimating power and trajectory, the strength of the mathematical area of your brain determines how well you'll judge the shot. This also removes the factor of strength and muscle memory, since it takes next to no strength to click a button and shoot an arrow (I hope...).

You don't have to be good at archer to cast your vote; @iMuffles explained well that both sides of this test must be accounted for.

If you want an idea of decent, here's my rule of thumb: being able to hit a moving target from about 60 blocks away in 3 or fewer shots. A good idea at being good at math: really, I can't help you much; if you enjoy doing math and/or you find that you don't struggle with it, that should qualify.

Please read all options carefully before answering. Answer honestly. I may or may not use this for a school project later.

    Thanks! c:

Also, spread the word to other archers you know, please. I'd like to get as many votes as possible.

if you're going to use this for a school project, only the options listed will probably not prove anything worth noting as evidence for a claim.

your sample size is only the people good at archer. say you get a clear correlation between good archers and good math grades. great, that proves that good maths = good block game sniping. except it doesn't.

if you're not even going to look at the other end of the scale, you might see that the worst archers are also good at maths, and maybe the people you're surveying are all good at maths. on the other hand, if you survey good/bad archers and see a clear trend, then your evidence is a lot more trustworthy.

not to mention countless other variables that may affect someone's archery skill. ping, experience, playtime, and personal opinion of what qualifies as "good" or "bad" at archer. someone may consider themselves very good while another better player considers them to be trash. the same applies for math skill. different schools have different standards, and an 87% on one school's test could be a 40% on a higher-standard school's test.

The subjectivity wasn't the only thing I pointed out in my post. If you don't have a proper argument to make, don't make one.

Its not how good you are at maths, its how often you do maths. You always work things out without knowing it and where to aim to get the trajectory right is something you work out automatically. The more you do maths, the better you are at working things out (and quicker you are at working things out), meaning you will get better at aiming like that.

It doesn't affect it much though. If you're good at aiming is mostly through practise.

How I aim a bow isn't to do with math at all. I create a virtual reality using my 3D imagination demonstrating the trajectory of the arrow according to the factors I give it such as distance to travel, bow drawback and the speed of the moving target. That's also what I do when I play badmington. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but most of the time, if I put enough concentration in it and take time to analyze the demonstration in my head and maybe view it again if the statistics are changed, I can hit the target most of the time. It also works well with short/mid-range shooting, but I go through the aiming proccess much quicker and may or may not hit a tiny bit less.

This is a pretty cool experiment, but I proved the hypothesis wrong, majorly. I'm great at math, but am a horrible archer. Not a bad hypothesis though!

Right. But the idea is that the same area of the brain is active while you're estimating that stuff in your head.

You have a very good point. Not to make excuses, but I intentionally left out the bad-at-archer side of the scale thinking that those results would have been irrelevant. But now I understand that it'll make the results much more interesting and at least a little more credible to include that.

The problem with this survey is that you also have to account for the small amount of randomized arrow drop on each and every individual shot.

Although I'm very good at archer (*toot* *toot*) and pretty good at math, it's not like I'm calculating force vectors in my head on every shot, it's more just a practiced knowledge of a player's top speed and the arrow's approximate ballistic trajectory to the point where it's unconscious knowledge of how much lead each shot needs. Every archer who's played for at least a month or two has this knowledge drilled into their brains from countless shots.

Predictable players to shoot at helps a lot too :stuck_out_tongue:

I had no idea there's a randomized arrow drop. For the skill level, though, this is far more about correlation than cause. I'm looking for skilled archer who happen to also be good at math. And anyway, I believe there is still a fair amount of estimation skill in Minecraft archery.

Just want to warn you that if this is a attempt to get a survey to replace a IRL Archer survey, you'll get it all wrong, as Minecraft Archery is much MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than IRL archery.
