Is CTF about kills?

    I see people saying CTF is not about kills all the time. Why isn't it?

    Let's say you're a Ninja (Red) going to try to steal the flag. As your Ender Pearl is flying through the air, a Heavy (Blue) comes up behind you and kills you.

    In this instance, I believe this is called "random killing," I'm not quite sure why though, because that Heavy did his team a service. He stopped the Ninja from potentially capturing the flag, or destroying an important asset of Blue's defense, say a Dwarf.

    Maybe the Ninja is on his way to recover his flag, and once again as he's running a Heavy broadsides him. This Heavy is once again a team MVP, and stopped the Ninja from potentially recovering his flag.

    Every kill doesn't need to be in the flagroom to not be a "random kill." Think about if there was no killing in a game. Everyone that is not defending would end up on the opposite team's side. Even inexperienced players.

    In the examples I presented, the alleged "random killer" still motivated the objective. There is no instance where this is not the case.

    To conclude, the reason I think people discourage this is because they get frustrated by dying in vain, before they could even reach their target. The plan they had in mind was at least to do something, but instead died to a "noob."

    Thank you.

    I don't really put CTF at kills, I just make it like this:

    • How many people can I rekt as an archer running into the flag room?

    I couldn't agree more. Even I get frustrated when I get killed when I'm trying to cap or glitch into spawnbox.

    Anyone who doesn't play the objective is automatically a tryhard.

    I kill for the fun of it! Though most times, my drive to have fun and kill scr00bs leads me to actually play the objective and flagroom clear, cap, defend, etc. It's all really connected. So call me a try hard if you want, idc. xPPP

    Well, it depends. If you're just endlessly spawnkilling over and over then what's the point in that. You'd keep people in spawn and win the game, yes, but equally it's not really much of a fun fight is it? Isn't the point of ctf is you want another team to fight against, not a group of people you want to kill over and over. As much as it would help you achieve the objective, you could do the same thing and give the other team a chance to play too.
    What I said above still holds true, sending people back to spawn is important, especially for offense as it delays the other team from being able to steal your flag. Killing the flagbearer means you can recover your flag. Killing a lot of people shouldn't be THE major aim of ctf, for ultimately the clues in the name, but since killing can help you do that, then it should be a pretty important. I suppose the point must be, why did they give us weapons if they didn't want us to kill each other?!

    Hm - I'm one of those people who just about always play objectively-based (or go revenge-killing). And I must say, if I see xXx_Pro_PvPer_xXx as a heavy running towards me being ninja, I find it hard to see how he is actually willing to do a good deed for his team, but rather he just went for me when seeing I didn't have armor.

    Now I agree that there is a certain non-randomkilling factor involved for recovery or midfield people. But the kill*****s - sorry - just don't count for me.

    And because he didn't even have the intention of creating an obstacle for me, nor will he cross my ways again during the whole game, I do not see him as an enemy player who tries to help his team, but as a random who should go play on KitPVP instead. Kind of like Tom the necro, right, @Firealarm_freak ? (;

    Let's put it like this. A heavy says he had a great game. 54-9 or something. But not even one recovery/cap. Did his awesome massacre anyhow help the score? From this POV, it didn't.

    But, I really have to admit you have a point.
    But this can only work if the heavy did it on purpose. If he is just running around the mid of, let's say Aquafus and trying to kill everything that comes through the mid, then that is random killing. If he knows he is doing this for the team- let's say he targets Assassins, then it's not random killing.

    The conclusion is, we never know the motive. So, in my opinion, calling people random killers is not right, unless we know 100% that this guy is killing randomly (let's say he admitted to it).

    I agree whole heartedly. Often I might be going to distract their defense as ninja, but I would be killed by a soldier or heavy that I might enderpearl into, or headshotted by an archer. Sure I would be annoyed, but to be fair, I was going to go distract their defense, which could have gotten my team a cap, and by killing me that random heavy / soldier / archer was kind of saving his team, not even bothering with the motive.

    I killed things because capturing the flag was too mainstream.

    Random killing is too nerdy for mainstream CTF and capping is too mainstream for nerdy CTF.

    Random killing is surely a strong aspect of most CTF games. Why do you think a match is a lot different than a normal game? Random killing is important in an indirect way as it hinders the enemy team from succeeding their set goals.

    It also contributes to the fact that certain classes with no set "roles" are stupidly OP like Archer and Mage because they excel at random killing.

    I kill because capping isn't my thing. I defend inside and outside the base.
    ++
    I kill to either warm-up my pvp skills before hopping onto another server, or to get better.

    Most people who random kill don't have any intention of helping their team. Random killing is different from midfielding imo. Midfielding is killing people at mid to help your team.

    ya what furtles said. ive had plenty of games where ive got a load of kills and not many deaths, but in basically all of those games i have no recovers/caps. i dont really think those kills are helpful for anything cuz all im doing is killing the same rands over and over. there's no way you would see me constantly kill players who are actually playing for objective cuz they are generally smart enough to avoid the midfield. that's why i think random killing serves no purpose in the game, and if u do kill a flag carrier/recoverer then its just by chance.

    Most people see midfielding as random killing anyway.
