Imo, "friendlies" and "pacifists" are a mixed bag. Sometimes they can be really funny and add to the game a lot, sometimes they're dead weight on an otherwise fun game.

As a TF2 player, I can tell you guys for sure that I've dealt with these guys a ton. Hoovies, Spycrabs, you name 'em. Friendly players are often searching for something different to do. For them, it's a nice change of pace.

In TF2, friendlies were really popular for a period of time. TF2 turned into the meme game where men in hats taunt and throw Sandviches at each other. This was cool and all, but then eventually serious play started to take over again. The opinion on friendlies vastly differs depending on the mood of the game.

In most games, a friendly isn't seen as too big of an issue. Sometimes it's funny. You're in a huge fight, taking out foes with your Rocket Launcher left and right. You turn the corner, and see an enemy Heavy. Your finger rests on the trigger, and you're prepared to blast this poor soul into smithereens, when you realize something; the Heavy isn't shooting at you. In fact... he seems to be holding a Sandwich of some sort, in his clumsy, large, digital hands. He crawls slowly towards you, yelling "Haaaalp!" and "Pootis Spencer Here!" And when he's just an inch away from you, the large Russian staring at your face as he kneels in front of you, he gives you his Sandvich. You're at full health, as you're such an MLG pro, so the Sandvich passes through you instead of providing its healing effects. However, you're still heartwarmed, as you give him a salute. He returns the gesture by pretending to shoot the wall with his mittens. You stare at each other, and before you can leave, an allied Pyro walks in and burns the Heavy to a crisp. The Heavy respawns, and the next time you see him you blast him off harder than Pikachu did to Team Rocket.

And just like that. A relationship was formed, matured, and ended in the span of 20 seconds. Engagements like these in TF2 is what makes the game so special. It's what gives the game character. Sure, the gameplay is really unique and balanced, and there's lots of fast-paced and deep strategy everywhere, but at the end of the day the characterization gives the game a lot of colour.

However, on the flip side of the coin, friendlies can ruin games. Many times a friendly or a group of them hop on a server and start doing nothing while the other people want to actually play. They get in the way, they cause team imbalances, and complain when you kill them. They detract from an overall serious-but-fun environment.

This is why friendlies are so controversial. They are really nice at best, but at worst they're horrible, horrible things.

In CTF, don't worry too much about friendlies. I personally don't find too many so it's mostly a non-issue for me. If they're bugging you, just kill them. There's not much they can say, because they really are intruding on a game of CTF. Sometimes it can be fun finding someone who doesn't want to kill you right away or steal your flag. If there's an over saturation of them I get pissed, and if I think that a friendly is taking up a player space in an otherwise close game, I'll be more pissed. But in regular Brawl public games, it's not too serious, so just do whatever you want. The friendlies are technically in the wrong, so they can't complain, but they aren't necessarily hurting anyone.

Those are my 2 cents anyway.

I've been doing this since like 2013. When there aren't enough regulars on to have a fun objective game I just hang out.

I just let them sit around, what bugs me is sometimes they will just randomly grab the flag and run after being friendly for a while (Much Betrayal)
