Do you prefer maps with multiple versions or new maps?

Hey guys. I was looking through the ctf sections and subsections and I realized that there are an awful lot of <name of map> v2, v3, v4, etc. I was wondering why this is. I know with some maps its nice to change up the game play a little bit to make everything more fair, but there are some maps that seem to be purely altered aesthetically. Do you, as the more loyal ctfers, enjoy maps to be "switched up" every now and then? It just seems strange to continue editing old maps instead of creating new ones. I'll add a poll, but I'd like to actually discuss it, as I was planning on creating a new ctf map eventually.

well I mean the problem isn't necessarily what we prefer, I think it's more down to aesthetics being prioritised over gameplay. Right now the new maps look nice enough, but the gameplay is so bad they only tend to last the wave. I personally don't really mind whether it's a rework or a new map entirely as long as it's nice for gameplay.

if there is some crazy concept for a map then imo it should be used for events and only for events. for example ghetty gardens v4 had the flags switched around, so red flag was next to blue spawn and vice versa. while it was fun to play for a bit, it just became a bit of a pain to play cuz its so unorthodox and it confused everyone, especially randies.

well lemme give you my reasons. I own/have made 17 completed ctf maps on build and a load more unfinished ones. of the 17 completed maps I have made, 9 have config and have been played in ctf. the number of reskins/remakes I have made that have config is 9. the number of originals I have made that have config is 0. I don't like making originals because they seemingly never get accepted. I made like 5-6 originals for wave X and none of them got accepted so I don't really care about making them anymore. reskins/remakes are easier because there is already a map to base off and there is seemingly a greater chance (at least from my experience) of them being accepted, so why not make them?

I have the same problem, usually in originals the gameplay is worse so it's better to rework and try to make a map better. I also think though that their should be more originals, when my first map around 18 months ago got a config (wasn't in rotation but it's playable), they had tweaked many of the bad gameplay issues with it, I don't know if they do this now but they definiteley should. As well as this, I think experienced ctfers and players who complain about crap maps should try and help map builders rather than just complaining (@LordCh4os, never have I seen you comment on someone's map, maybe if you were to do that that could help maps be improved because it has an experienced players input). I just find it annoying when people complain about maps with bad gameplay yet they don't try making their own or suggesting something you could do to make it better. A good example of this was when people were complaining about Desert Strike (new one), they suggested a few ideas and so @Daniellll decided to change it a little and it fixed the map quite a bit.

So the trick is to make the map, then get a bunch of friends together to test it out with the different "classes". Go for gameplay first, then work on aesthetics. And what I'm getting from blackout is that it's fine as long as literally every class is equally overpowered or underpowered.

It's difficult to test it out with a few friends, seeing as these maps will be played on CTF servers with up to 50 people on, all playing different classes with different strategies. You're right in saying that gameplay > aesthetics, which is why most people work on reworks of popular maps that already have a decent gameplay. Also, what do you mean by "equally overpowered or underpowered"?

I think they should be put on a testing server, there could be an announcement for a testing session in the ctf discord when people can join say Testing Server #5
When testing they should give feedback on what they like and don't like. There could be 2-3 rounds of testing per map.

Similar situation to @November. Reworks I have helped in/completed have had a way higher chance of getting accepted. Personally I enjoy looking for gameplay flaws in current maps and fixing them through a rework.

    ORIGINAL MAPS.

Original maps all the way. I like seeing the creative side of CTF players and what new and original maps they can come up with. Of course, not all original maps made are guaranteed to have great gameplay, but that's the fun of an original map. It's something new.

If an existing map needs a gameplay change, sure, I'm all for that. However, redoing the aesthetics of a map is detrimental to the CTF map pool. Either the redone map has the exact same gameplay and we now have two of the exact same map in the map pool (leading to boredom), or the redone map has different gameplay, at which point, is it even a reskin of the original map or a brand new one?
