Hey, I think it would be good for the teamscene if there would be a new tourney during November/December this year. Though I think if done again, it should be changed so the flaws of the last tourney will be removed. If interested keep on reading. If you are from the CTF Committee, please read it because it is a detailed proposal.

Keep in mind that this is based on 16 teams participating, so there could be some changes depending on the number of teams participating.

    Setup

The CTF Tournament would have 16 teams participating. This gives the chance to have 4 groups of 4 teams. Every CTF-team should get guaranteed access to the tournament. Remaining places will be filled up by teams specially created for the tourney, consisting of other people from Brawl who would like to participate in it.

The 4 groups will be made depending on the strength on the teams. The most logical way is to place the teams in 4 pools. The strongest teams will be placed in pool 1, and the weakest teams in pool 4. Each group can only have 1 team from each pool. Said pools can be made by a vote done by refs and the CTF Committee. Once the pools have been created, the groups will be created by random, taking 1 team from each pool for every group.

Once the group phase is over, we will move into the knockout stage, which is a single elimination bracket. From each group the top 2 teams will qualify for this. Number 1 spots can only face number 2 spots in the quarterfinals. The matchups in the quarterfinals will be as following: #1A vs #2B, #1B vs #2A, #1C vs #2D and #1D vs #2C. Winning teams will advance further into the knockout stage. Losers of the semi-finals will play a 3rd place match. The winner of the final will be crowned the new CTF ‘champion’.

    Matches

Each team will play 6 matches in the group phase, facing every other team in the bracket twice. This will take place over the course of 3 or 4 weeks. This would make for a total of 24 matches that have to be played in 3 or 4 weekends. This makes it that either 6 or 8 matches will have to be played each weekend. This will be done in November.

Once the group phase is over, we move into knockout stage. This has 4 matches in the quarterfinal round, and 2 matches in both the semifinal round and the final round. Every round would get a separate weekend so you would need an additional 3 weekends to finish the tournament. This will be done in December.

Matches in the group phase will be a best of 3 like a usual CTF match. Once you get into the knockout stage, the matches will be a best of 5.

Match times would be 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm EST on Saturday/Sunday, depending on how many matches are supposed to happen. Every match will get a match time assigned, but these times are flexible and could be moved in consultation with the refs and reps. The match threads have to be made at least 1 week before the match, including information about refs and maps.

In case a match ends in a complete draw, there will be played more games until there is a winner. A team can also decide to forfeit these ‘extra matches’. If after 10 games there is still no winner, both teams pick 1 archer which will 1v1 on Unholy Faith (3 kills wins you the match).

    Rules

Rules will have to be the same for every match in the tourney - this set of rules will be created by the CTF Committee. The match size will be more flexible than last year. Base match size will be 8 players per team, but if both teams agree on an increase, the capacity can be expanded up to a maximum of 10. Decreases in match size will be stricter. If a team really can’t get 8 people, they are allowed to play with 7 or 6. Their opponent does not have to drop lower than 7 - they are allowed to play with 1 more than the first team in that case.

    Maps

Maps will be handpicked by the CTF Committee and the reps. Each participating team will be allowed to pick 1 map, and the CTF Committee will pick the last one. In the group phase, you can’t play the same maps in 3 successive games. This means that if you pick, for example, Blackout in game 1 of the group phase, you can’t pick it again until game 4. This rule gets removed once you enter the knockout stage. Here, the CTF Committee picks 2 of the 5 maps. The refs each get to pick 1 map. The final map (which will be played as the fifth map) will be picked based on a vote done in the CTF Important Rep Chat by a selection of 3 maps, which will be made by the CTF Committee.

A few maps will be blacklisted due to being unplayable (Chunez, Slums, etc.). This list will be made by the CTF Committee, in collaboration with the reps.

    Prizes

It would be amazing if this can be another official event sponsored by Brawl, but I am not going over this here.

    Q&A

    Why in November and December?

Doing it in November and December will give the CTF Committee enough time to prepare it. It will give the teams enough time to prepare and it will give, if necessary, brawl enough time to advertise so tourney-teams can be created (who knows how good some War-Z or Wild West players are at CTF?)

    Why allow tourney-teams?
So that people who aren’t currently in a CTF team can still participate in the event. The CTF-teams are obviously the most important teams in the tourney, but by allowing people from other Brawl servers to participate, you will increase the success of the tourney.

Why are the groups based on pools?
This makes it really hard to create group of deaths or walkover groups - for example, this prevents a group of DF, RR, SN and TT from forming and already eliminating two good teams from the tournament, and so losing more exciting games.

Why a group phase and a knockout stage?
To give the teams that are not that good a decent chance to show themselves. Every team will be guaranteed 6 matches at least. Starting in knockout stage reduces the amount of matches, and some teams will be knocked out straight in the first round.

Why a single-elimination bracket instead of a double?
In my opinion, a single-elimination - combined with a knockout stage - with 5 maps a game is the best option for a tournament to make it fair for everyone. Single-elimination also offers a quicker knockout stage once it starts. Single + group phase is much logical, fair, fun than double + group phase. Aside from that we had a succesfull single one and the double one was a failure because nobody played their matches in the double elimination side of the bracket.

Why best-of-5’s in the knockout phase?
To get more cool matches and prevent a team from losing to unfortunate circumstances (for example losing blackout 5-0, then winning 3-0 and drawing the last map).

    Why assigned match times?
To make sure the tournament finishes in the assigned time?

What happens if you get knocked out?
Last year, nobody was allowed to make matches. This time, once you get knocked out, feel free to play matches as long as they don’t interfere with the tournament - their matches can be official and unofficial. Tournament matches have absolute priority (will stop your match if you are over time). Teams that haven’t been knocked out yet aren’t allowed to play official or unofficial matches. They are allowed to scrim.

Sounds interesting. Could this also include predictions from analysts at Match Spotlight Weekly (and other stuff) @gamren?

December is actually a bad timing for those with exams, I have a feeling it could be better if you'd do it December-January or even later cuz then university peepz will have their exams. Great idea though +1

Disagree, only 8 matches total have to be played in december, which you would have known if you read it. Rest is in november. So it would make perfect sense to do it in these two months.

Yes, I was actually hoping that a tourney would sprout up sometime in the future. Since we already have every single team but SN's consent, covering the tourney with predictions and hopefully all around coverage of matches would be pretty nice.

    Anyways great idea snow

Even though a two-legged donkey with a stick is better at CTF than me, I would still like to participate in one of the noob teams.

The only thing I'm worried about is whether or not people are going to get enough players in the months suggested for the Tourney to take place. December is less of a problem I believe, as most of the people are going to have Winter/Summer holidays depending on location, but in November people will probably have less play time and more important duties such as work and school. It would make much more sense if the tourney started in the Summer months (maybe do the 4th Tourney next year in July/August???) as people would be on their longest holidays and also have no school (for the majority of ctf at least)
