Archer. It has ranged instakills, and if you know a good place to camp in each map and you have a good aim, its almost impossible for someone to do anything about it. All an enemy can do is try to dodge the arrows, and they can't do that if you hit them first try so likely don't see you. Also, the person who's highest on the leaderboard, @LordCh4os, is an archer main.

Going heavy, if you have a chemist who will buff you all the time, is also a good idea. If you're good at PvP, a buffed heavy can kill most things. The only reason why buffed heavy isn't as good is because its a lot more vulnerable - if an assassin, archer, skilled mage or a pyro with frenzy ready to activate, they can quite easily kill you. If you don't have a chemist who can buff you but would rather go a more PvP-oriented play style, go chemist. Heavy without buffs is often not great, as chemist will do more damage if its buffed. It does receive more damage, but overall will last longer since it has a higher health pool. You'll need to practise using health potions and regeneration potions properly to maximise its health pool, though.

For actual defence (staying in the flagroom only and not leaving, so not recovering), dwarf is the best class. Although its very boring to play, if you can get it up to level 10, you'll have a sharpness X, knockback III, fire aspect II diamond sword, and decent armour. If you have a medic and other people to take out any mages that try to attack you (which you likely will do, since you'll be in the flagroom), you'll be almost unkillable.

For recovering, its very conditional. The main classes you can use are:

• Ninja
• Assassin
• Pyro
• Chemist
• Heavy

If the opponent doesn't have a lot of support, simply go ninja. Although it has low armour, you can suddenly appear out of invisibility and get a combo, and with speed II, it'll be hard for the flag carrier to break it. You will probably end up dying, but the enderpearls allow you to get to the other side of the map in 20 seconds in most maps, so you can have another go at them. Obviously, if they have a medic, you'll need to kill them in just one fight. Ninja isn't great if the flag carrier has support, as it has no armour and can be 3 shot by almost anything.

This is ending up to be a lot longer than I anticipated...

Assassin is good if you're not great at comboing, or the flag carrier has support (since assassin can kill much quicker than ninja). Try to sneak up on the flag carrier, without them or any support they may have from spotting you. This can also be done when a flag carrier is running back from your base, as they will be focusing on getting back to base quickly rather than what's around them. Just keep in mind that people will often go in F5 so they can see what's behind them without actually turning around, so running behind them often won't work. Try to get ahead of them and hide behind a wall.

Pyro is another a better choice if the flag carrier has support, since it has a higher health pool, more armour and can kill just as quickly. Also, if the flag carrier is just blocking, assassin will be useless unless you can get a distraction to make them unblock. To recover as pyro, make sure your frenzy is ready before trying to kill the flag carrier (just by hitting a few noobs and running). As soon as you get frenzy, run and find the flag carrier. Sometimes they'll camp in water, so try to hit them out of the water than activate your frenzy. If its annoyingly placed water, right in a corner, this may not be possible.

So, if the flag carrier is camping with support and is blocking in water, the above classes won't really work. For this, I'd recommend going either chemist or heavy, if you get buffs. They're not commonly used for recovery, but if your team isn't co-operating and you can't get any help, their high armour or high health pool will come in handy. Just run in, focus on the flag carrier and get as many crits as you can. Don't expect this strategy to work all the time, but it'll sometimes be the only way to recover off a co-ordinated team.

Necro. It has absolutely no use in the game right now - almost all you can do is place a spawner down in an annoying place and camp. Only other use is using it for capping, as it has decent armour and a high health pool, but it has no helpful abilities so its not used for this purpose. All the other classes, even elf (which is often thought of as being useless), does have a purpose and can be used effectively.

Ninja, specifically ninja capping. Even though its often frowned upon, getting a cap by pearling out of a flag room with 15 people is one of the most satisfying moments I have on CTF. I don't play it often, only when the other team has an OP defence and our team isn't really playing very well, but its very fun when I do.
