CTF Map Wave XII released

    Hey fellow CTFers!

    The last CTF map wave was far too long ago, so it is time to release a new one! You might remember the map testings back in 2016: Since the community wanted to have more influence on which maps are picked, we decided to have all submitted maps (minus those that absolutely were not suitable for CTF) played ingame at certain times called ‘rotation days’ and record the votings there to determine which maps are liked the most. We also held a forum poll, which was included in the overall results. After compiling the data and selecting a cutoff point, these are the maps that are live on the servers now:

    325556 - Rocky Ruins by GalaThundR
    327372 - Sphinxes by Xelasi & xxMineSheepxx
    241146 - Willow Pass by Xelasi
    318744 - Wisteria Grove by EddKrumbs

    The cutoff point was 65% and higher for reworks and 62% and higher for new maps. This resulted in a roughly equal amount of reworks and new maps to be added. We also dropped the lower rated Dragon Valley by Rhoske, DeZilla, Doges and flyguy23ndm in favor of the next highest map, Unholy Faith V by Xelasi, Shawn and xxMinesheepxx with 64.98%, as we now have two Dragon Valley variants in rotation.

    The final ingame and forum ratings were compiled by Hana in this document for you to view. The forum votes and ingame votes both count 50% towards the end results.

    Removed maps
    The following seven maps were removed from rotation due to poor ratings:
    Academy I
    Aquafus IV
    Walrus Creek
    Lighthouse V
    Tuscan City I
    Castle Wars IV
    Serpent's Lair IV

    With this new rotation there are a few maps with the different variations included, depending on the ratings over the next few weeks the lower rated variations might be removed.

    A few of the original maps are pretty big... let's see how they work out long term. Also, good work to the builders of Valley of Siege. It looks much nicer than the original. Same with the clocktower reskin.

    I'm not really sure why Dragon Valley or Platforms needed a rework. What was wrong with the originals?

    Edit: It has been pointed out to me that Dragon Valley was in need of an aesthetic update. I can agree it could use some improvement, but the rework is not a simple reskin.

    (On a side note, I really appreciate that the Platforms rework went with a medieval ruined theme. Definitely new and original.)

    Kauwela Shore has a very misleading spawn at first. It's hard to find the flag.

    It's a reskin, except for the flag room, which is completely different. A complete rework of the flag room, if you will.

    Actually, I think Dragon Valley really needed some love... the aesthetic was getting really outdated.

    I'm interested in seeing how everything plays out.

    Hopefully we can actively adjust maps when issues arise.

    I'm also interested in scaling back some maps that are overcomplicated, to include stuff I've done. I think I could simplify some stuff and it would be more pleasant for gameplay.

    There are beacons to show where the flag is ^^ Also, it's to your right at spawn. There are only two paths anyways, so I wouldn't find it very misleading.

    Why do you think it's misleading? I can probably edit it a tiny bit so it's less confusing.

    It was based on the old map idea, but we pretty much built an entire new map from scratch.

    I think it's because you spawn without a good visual indication of where you are.

    When I first spawned on the map, I was looking inside the houses for the flag. Even with the beacon, the flag isn't obvious at first where its placed. Also, beyond my own experience, I saw two players were asking for help finding it when it was playing on CTF.

    And on the wooden bridge out of the flag room on the western version of kill creek. (preferably not the whole wooden bridge, just by the exits out of the flag room)

    Mind you the ranking of the last few maps keeps fluctuating over time.
