bringing up depression in game is pointless, and degrades our most important human right, life

Not an excuse. Its a fact.

 

Yes I admit, I only wrote a comment here because I crave for positive ratings.
That was really the first thing which came to my mind when I saw a thread on depression: "oh hell yeah I can farm ratings here and thus feel better about myself".
Guess that's still better than starting an obviously very well thought-out two-sentence-reply onna thread about depression with LOL.

I absolutely agree that joking about depression and suicide is not a moral thing to do. I am myself guilty of it myself sometimes, yet I know depression is a real thing. The general consensus is that help should be seeked out immediately, however, I only somewhat agree with that. Everyone is different. Every life is different. There is a very rare chance your story relates to theirs and you will never, ever fully understand it. As a result, they may have reasons to commit suicide, or do other things resulting from depression such as intentionally causing self-inflicted injuries. I would personally attempt to help a friend, and will be very sad if they choose to harm themselves, however, I will be understanding that they may have reasons to do so.

However, your decision to take action and complain on the forums is not the best decision. It will spark nothing but controversy. This is the Internet. The comments here may insult you, but if you are incapable of tolerating it, I suggest you stay away from the Internet. This community may have very toxic people, however it is nothing compared to some Factions servers, for example. Other online communities apply as well. Making such comments punishable is not helpful. You are expecting others (staff) to be there. First, they will not always be there to catch these people saying such things. Second, you are not becoming tolerant of these things. If you ever end up in a situation where you have to handle these comments on your own, you will not be prepared to do so. Harassment is all over the Internet, and it will never be eradicated. One prime example is the harassment of caucasian female users of the site Quora, causing many affected users who wrote some of the best content on the site to leave.

Speaking of leaving, it is one way of dealing with it. Not necessarily leaving, but ignoring the comments. Now, if /block worked, this would be an easy task, however, one could argue you are not becoming “tolerant” of these comments if they aren’t reaching you in the first place. In that case, read the comments, but take no offense to them. There are many ways of thinking to approach this problem, but one of them may be to think that the people who may utter them are immature and unaware of the situation.

Unaware I may be. I have not been in a situation where I considered suicide, so there are definitely flaws to my comment. I apologize for any possible misconceptions. Feel free to criticise as you please.

 

I don't like fake suicide threats. However i strongly disagree with punishing anyone who talks about it. I say that as someone who lost a good friend to suicide not to long ago. He stayed quiet and kept it hush. It cost him his life cause he never got help. forcing people to stay silent only encourages more of the same by telling people. "Shut up no one cares" that right there a great disservice to those who suffer with depression

Most people who say they will kill themselves, usually don't. I see it more as a phrase to communicate to everyone how you are feeling. I am guilty of saying this sometimes, but so far 100% of the time it's just been in my head. I think a good way to solve this is whenever someone types intentional death threats towards themselves, it be treated just as if they were talking about killing someone else. Because either way, they are talking about a life, not some game and that should not tolerated in a minecraft chat.

 

And sadly, vice-versa.

 

I believe a lot of people come online to escape these problems and sometimes if they find the right person to talk to who will listen might even help. I know its not convenient to talk about it and they possibly could be searching for someone to just feel sorry about them- however Depression is a huge topic and a very serious thing. Sometimes they may come off as for searching for attention but in reality the just need someone to vent to. It happens and life is hard like that. Sometimes parents or their family don't understand that their child is depressed because they believe they've brought their child up correctly and have a wonderful life- yet Depression is a chemical imbalance in someones brain, they cant control it neither can their parents and its hard for them to understand that. I do agree that it should not be a trend and children shouldn't follow it because its very degrading to those who have it but bringing this up like this is not the way to address this problem. I think bringing up the fact of threatening someones life by stating "go kill yourself" is not correct and should be re-portable- but someone talking about suicide and going to kill themselves shouldn't be re-portable to ban them- instead perhaps giving them helpful links like a suicide hot line would be more appropriate.
