Mandatory Match Rules Are a Sign of Poor Game Balance

    I feel as if the title is rather self-explanatory. If your official matches require restrictions on what classes may be played, how said classes are utilized, and how mechanics are to be utilized, it is a sign of poor game balance present within the map balancing or class balancing. Rather than instate any mandatory match rules, work should be undertaken so as to fix the issues that require such mandatory match rules to be created in the first place. In the case of Engineer/Dwarf bans, fix Engineer/Dwarf so as to make them compatible with and fair within competitive play. In the case of "spam restrictions," either remove what makes said spam effective or integrate counter-measures within the classes themselves that prevent spam. I am quite well aware that I am very likely repeating myself from a while ago, but it is honestly disgraceful to come back here and see that virtually nothing has been done to fix the underlying issues that necessitate the existence of said match rules.

    Hell if you think I am going to put more effort into this thread than Brawl puts into this gamemode. Not sure why I even made this post in the first place; it is pretty self-evident that this gamemode will remain in this same sorry state until it inevitably dies with the rest of Brawl.

    There is nothing wrong with engineer or dwarf, just kinda op in different scenarios sometimes. They should remove engineer and dwarf so you wont complain though. Good reason??

    Engineer isn't OP or game-breaking anymore, it's just not allowed in matches because it naturally slows down the game and can create longer stalemates, which isn't fun to play against in a small match format. That doesn't make engineer harmful to CTF, in fact, that's the role it should be fulfilling. It's just a lot more impactful in an 8v8 or 10v10 than it is in a 20v20. I think engi is fine as is, but if we want it to be playable in matches changes will have to be made.

    Dwarf is also banned because it unreasonably slows down games, though in quite a different way. Unlike engineer, I think there's not a whole lot that can be changed about dwarf without fundamentally changing how the class works or making it too weak, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting to see it in matches.

    Well, you're not wrong. If it's not allowed in matches then yeah it might be a sign that it needs a tweak in the next update.

    The casual and competitive scenes are so different that it might not even be possible to perfectly balance them both. Certainly worth exploring though.

    Another idea would be to acknowledge that they're different and to develop them as two separate gamemodes.

    I very much agree with the first half, however the idea of separating the two wouldn’t be healthy imo. If we had a bigger community, maybe, but I don’t thinkseparating our community would not be good, considering for many people the community is what keeps them coming back. I just think overall the second idea would be more trouble than it’s worth.

    90% of ctf's problems could be fixed by removing dwarf, necro, and engineer

    imo, i dont really like the idea of dwarf and engineer which can be frustrating in groups. dwarf's sword gets stronger each level and becomes op and annoying

    necro should just get a complete rework. its just a class where you lose your progress of unlocking skeletons and blazes (which arent even that good) to an assassin or (insert how you died here). not a fan of classes like the current necro

    remove engineer and dwarf

    Lol, i play engi and necro sometimes 2. I play heavy for defense as well.
    Though i do play mage a lot rn. Which is 10% of the time.

    Agreed, though the nature of Engineer and Necro is to have something else do the killing for you, which promotes camping. And since they are not the strongest classes (except for engineer which is overpowered in certain situations), they aren't suitable for matches. It was attempted to bring Necro players more into active gameplay by replacing the spawner with eggs, but that yielded mixed results.

    I completely agree that the rules listen in MMR are a sign of poor game balance. One of my original goals as staff was to get everything listed under MMR fixed and removed. So far the necro ban has been removed and changes have been made to medic teaming/elf that will update MMR following the tournament.

    They have MMR so you don't have a team play 7 ninjas or 5 assassins. It doesn't matter how much you nerf or modify a class, if you have a **** ton of them it's still annoying. Engineer is cancer and should never be in matches.

    The MMR doesn't actually restrict class limits, teams add the custom class limits to their matches if they wish to.

    I think a majority part was/is the fact that old maps could be chosen for specific teams that heavily lean towards a certain class. (I don't know if this exists anymore)

    If a class is so unbalanced so as to promote a team composition made up mostly or entirely of that class, it is an evidently unbalanced class. There is a reason why, despite how annoying it may be, mostly or all Archer team compositions don't exist; they don't work. And if Engineer is such an issue that it shouldn't be allowed in team matches, doesn't that suggest that Engineer should be reworked or completely removed?

    I am all for removing engineer completely. I really hate necro too, but one can't have it all. Remove engineer and rework necro. As far as balancing classes, you'll never have true balance because some classes function better or more efficient depending on the maps you are on and how users play the said class.

    The mod’s and devs have already said multiple times that removing classes is not an option. I don’t know why you still keep trying to bring it up like it is one.
