to literally nobody's surprise, people are still submitting map remakes. in some cases it actually works nicely, but i feel that some of our ctfers have lost touch with time. kill creek 6, blackout 2-10, moria 6, beaver creek... you see where i'm going.

for more recent maps i could honestly care less, but this trend of bringing back 7 year old maps from the grave because your reskin looks better is hardly efficient in the scheme of attempting to make ctf a dynamic environment. i know it can be hard to find ideas for new maps that actually work in ctf, but it needs to start happening. players who are familiar with the later versions are (and will be) sick of the limited block array in 1.8, so the least we can do is diversify as much as possible instead of constantly living in the past.

There's nothing wrong with reworking a very old map. The sole purpose is to improve and build upon it. And some tend to make it into rotation because it manages to do that and more. There's testing for this stuff to assure you have a say on bad maps, and that they don't get into the next wave. Some deserve to get in and there's a reason why they do.

I think this perception is due to the fact that a rework is the only way to change a map in CTF. In other games, maps are fixed or rebalanced incrementally through small updates, but nobody calls them different names. Some reworks are completely different maps (Aquarium --> Aquarium I) and some are just tweaks to the existing map (Opposites Collide VII --> VIII). In other games the latter type usually doesn't count as a new map.

I’m sure that there are a lot of people that would like the concepts of some old maps brought back, but of course the gameplay wasn’t that good a few years back. The point of a rework is to make the older maps better in gameplay and improve on the design/decoration and I really like that idea.

I'm not saying ban all remakes, I'm saying the rotations are so heavily loaded with them each time that the actual new maps get drowned out. I was wrong to say people aren't making enough new maps - the correct version of that is that a majority of them (including the good ones) are overlooked because the same 200 people vote on each testing wave, and of that 200 the majority somehow isn't tired of the repetition. "Assuring you have a say" means nothing when you're whispering at someone with a megaphone.
