    Teamspeak existed back then too though, and it had IM as well.

    It wasn't as stable, and servers still had to be rented/bought or you had to have a god-like internet/computer for the time period to host one.

    Plus, if you were high rated and/or well known, your server would most likely just get DDoS'd as well, and that's no fun.

    Fair point. It's too bad that we're so attached to Skype now with a lot of new and better services existing, but for it's time I guess it was the best option.
