My faith in humanity is slowly slipping away..
Another mass shooting, this time in San Bernardino, California (60 miles east of Los Angeles). It occurred at a center for people with developmental disabilities. Really? What could you possibly have against these people? 14 people have lost their lives, 17 others were injured by at least 3 unknown suspects with assault-style rifles and pistols, dressed in all-black. 2 of the suspects - a man and a woman - were shot and killed by police in a shootout a few miles from the shooting. The third person is in custody, however he might not even be connected to the shooting (in other words, they may have the wrong guy, somehow). Oh, and this took place during a holiday event at the center, too. According to an official, one of the suspects was at the holiday event where the shooting transpired, and there was some sort of dispute, and the man is believed to have returned with 2 other suspects, armed.

It's not clear whether or not this was terrorism.

But the fact that these people somehow had a motive to do this.. it just blows my mind.

    More information.

You know what we need to do to fix this? Arm every person with developmental disabilities with high-powered machine guns. That way if they get attacked again, they can fight back. Because y'know, a right to a killing machine is in the constitution, so...

This was very sad. I think gun laws need to be amended limiting the weapons, clip size, and background checks on all weapons sold.

    It's becoming an epidemic.

Or instead of simply nerfing the gun laws you could remove them all together. The reason why Americans say that they need guns is to protect themselves right? Protection from what? I'll tell you: people with guns. The reason why people need guns to defend themselves is because guns are allowed in the first place. How many other countries around the world have these problems? None. How many other countries around the world allow anyone to have a gun? None. So is it coincidence that the only country in the world that allows people to openly bare arms has the highest amount of genocides and mass shootings? I think not. If the USA didn't allow people to have guns in the first place, people would not need guns to defend themselves against maniacs with them.

Now you may be saying "But Felix, even if people weren't allowed to own guns things like this would happen". Yes of course they would; murder and crime happens all the time around the world but America has one of the highest if not THE highest crime rate in the "first world". Allowing anyone to have a gun is a recipe for disaster. Look at countries like New Zealand where you have to get an allowance from the government to own a gun. When was the last time that there was someone breaking into a school or a movie theatre and killing people? The last time there was a massacre like this in NZ was 1997 nearly 20 years ago. It seems like there is a new shooting every week or so in the states.

Sorry for this little rant but this whole topic gets me extremely heated and it frustrates me that people still allow anyone to have a gun regardless.

This is so saddening. But nothing can really be done about it, people will be people, their own thoughts that go on and hurt others, targetting a specific area for their own reasons. Why, why must our world be like this.
May all their souls Rest In Peace.

I know it's saddening, but you can do something. People will do awful things, yes, but only if they can stroll down to their local WalMart or whatever, and buy a tool that enables them to. You ever seen someone go on a killing spree with a knife? One person gets stabbed, everyone runs away. Humanity is not ready for every citizen to own a gun, America seriously needs to wake up. Consider this when you vote next year.

How long until the US bans guns? Enough innocent people have died and it feels as if nothing is being done about it.

The most frustrating part is how desensitized we've become. It's just become a natural occurrence. My dad told me and I just thought "Again? Oh". Visiting the families of those killed has become a routine thing for Obama. He may as well put it in his schedule it's become so common.

How tf can anyone argue that we should not restrict guns, under the logic that people will still break the law anyways?

If that's the case, why have traffic laws?

    Why have any laws?

People should be allowed to own guns, however they should be highly and strictly regulated by the government if not a neutral third party organization. I mean, canadians are allowed to have guns, but they're not for sale for anyone who has not undergone a pretty rigorous test to prove that they're responsible enough to own one.

We've had maybe one shooting that I can even recall, and it was self-defense.

What's the old saying? Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Guns aren't the problem. Uncontrolled gun sales are.
    ------

Also the U.S. appears to have a facination with shootings, making them big media spectacles.

That makes for a great speech but it's completely untrue.

(the above is the number of gun deaths per 10,000 people)

U.S. is way below a lot of other countries.

Also completely untrue. You are literally narrowing the causes of mass shootings down to one thing - that there was a gun and because there was a gun or because people had guns available to them they killed people. Furthermore, America does not have the 'highest level of genocides' so I have no idea where you pulled that bogus statement from.

As @BAWSS5 already said, guns don't fire themselves. But, some other factors that I suggest you look at before trying to pin mass shootings on one thing are stuff like the sh*tty state of America's mental health institutions (some mentally ill have been beaten and strapped naked to chairs because staff didn't know how to handle them), awful working conditions such as the ones that reportedly existed in the San Bernidino facility (one of the shooters was reportedly an employee), the fact that one family (the Waltons of Walmart) own as much wealth as the bottom 40% of Americans leaving most Americans in hopeless economic situations, or the fact that police are being increasingly militarized with high-tech equipment they don't need. Or maybe the fact that black and hispanic Americans are paid 60-70 cents on the white man's dollar, not to mention other forms of race discrimination could also be a contributing factor to unrest and eventually shootings. A whole host of emotional problems - especially depression - are also factors that can drive people (especially youth) to shoot up schools or other places. A lot of these extreme economic problems are actually pretty unique to America for first world countries. As one of the wealthiest nations in the world we have the greatest income inequality of any developed nation.

All of these factors are HUGE contributors to violence. Removing guns entirely is like trying to treat a disease without examining its symptoms, and typically that doesn't work very well.

Lolwut. Allowing police to have a gun is a recipe for disaster? Strongly disagree.

    Guns don't fire themselves man.

One of the benefits to being able to own a gun in America is that you can protect yourself from people who are so deranged and psychopathic that they will get their hands on a weapon - like a gun - if they really want too. Another is that in some ways owning a gun is a way to survive, like in the slums on the South Side of Chicago or in other equally or more dangerous and impoverished places. Also, some people just like to hunt, and it's pretty big in Vermont, parts of California, Nebraska, and other parts of the U.S.

Your argument is the pinnacle of a the ridiculous belief that since total gun control worked in European and a variety of other first world countries, it would work in America. As I have previously stated, people in America already feel like their civil liberties are under attack, which they are. You've got a mass media that's drumming up fears about Syrian refugees (which is utterly ridiculous), shootings occurring with increasing frequency, more and more income inequality, more homelessness, more drugs, more crime, a government that is trying to pass trade deals like the TPP which ships even more American jobs overseas to virtual serfs in Vietnam, a congress that doesn't listen, a justice system that is ridiculously corrupt, and an increasingly militarized police force.

All of those things would drive anyone to their gun. It's the weapon of last resort for some people and taking it away isn't going to stop mass shootings.

As I see it, and with the gun culture the way it is, even removing guns entirely would not only make the average citizen more vulnerable in some instances, but it would likely start a revolution.

(mind, I do support increased and more rigorous background checks as well as an assault weapons ban. No one should be allowed to walk around with a weapon like that under the law)

Your fancy little chart only proves that the under-developed, corrupt African nations have more gun homocides than us. Finland, Switzerland, and other first world counties have a third of our killings or less.

    Canada has a fifth.

You really should check to see if your info graphic actually helps your case.

In this case you have done legitimately nothing but prove that the US is the worst first world country when it comes to protections of gun violence.

You should check your sarcasm meter because I'm pretty sure it's over 9000.

Also no it does not. America has less shootings than Mexico for example which the last time I checked, is not a 'corrupt African country' and neither is Brazil, Panama, or Uruguay. Is that great? No of course not. However Mrcowlick was saying that the U.S. has more shootings etc. than any other country and that's clearly not the case, so yes I would say that the chart helped my argument. Next time please read my post before making incorrect assumptions.

    2 quick things:
    1) black & hispanic people aren't explicitly paid less, they earn less via a pretty wide variety of reasons, of which maybe like 2 are race reasons,
    &
    2) I don't get notifications when you tag me and I don't know why :/

True. But America has more income inequality than any other first world country, way more people and land mass than any other European country, and consequently more poor people. The point? Poverty breeds violence, which is going to happen with or without guns.
