I finished my voluntary year, now I miss the birds. So here's a rather unspectacular spectacular bird we caught on my penultimate day on the island.

Looks as boring as a bird can look, but there is something special about this one. My colleague caught it when showing our trapping garden to his visiting family and first identified it as a Marsh warbler. However our boss, one of the best field ornithologists in Germany to my reckoning, came in at that moment and identified it as a Blyth's reed warbler after checking for some characteristics of that species.
Those two species are not the only ones that are hardly distinguishable. There is a third species, the Reed warbler, which is – if caught – rather easily told apart from the aforementioned two by certain measurements which are rather complicated to explain without pictures.
You should look up some pictures of the species mentioned here, so you can see with your own eyes why we can have difficulties telling them apart sometimes.
Now the special part about this is not the misidentification. Marsh warblers and Reed warblers are pretty common on Heligoland and I'm sure we misidentified one or two in my time because some have intermediate characteristics. The special part is the fact that Blyth's reed warblers are rare – like really rare – in Central Europe. This individual was only the third ever to be caught on the island. The species' breeding distribution extends from Finland and the Baltic states as far eastwards as Siberia. It's a migratory species wintering on the Indian subcontinent.
So now you know ornithologists can sometimes get excited about seemingly boring, inconspicuous birds and you also know why. Thanks for reading.
