It's no surprise that CTF is not noob friendly, and it's going to become its downfall in the future by pushing new players away from the gamemode. Now, there's many ways to make ctf more noob friendly; more balanced maps, class balancing, removing engineer, etc. but this post is mainly to focus on an improved help display for newcomers to understand the basics of the classes and gamemode.

    • Notifs

Whenever a player is killed by either Assassin or Archer, they will get a notification in front of them that show them how the instakill works and how to counter it. This will mainly stop Assassin from scaring any new player away in the matter of seconds.
These messages will always appear after the player is instakilled.
/notif can be used to toggle on/off these messages from appearing.

    • Help Menu (/help)

/help can be used to open a help menu. This menu lists information about classes, objectives, credits, etc.
    The menu looks like so:

The clickable options listed are as follows:

Banner - "How to play the game" - When clicked, it will automatically open a book that tells the player how to play the game. Specifically how to capture the flag and the flag/team colors and spawnblocks. Similar to the help book back on mcpvp.
Diamond Sword - "Class Help" - When clicked, it will open a menu where every class is listed. The menu looks like so:
When clicking a certain class, another menu will open describing the abilities and counters of that class.
Map - "Objectives" - When clicked, a menu will appear showing the player the main roles of the game (Defense, Offense, and Recovery) It will describe how these are roles are played and the main goal towards them.
Gold Ingot - "Credits" - When clicked, it executes the /credits command and just opens the credits menu. Lists how to gain credits and how many credits the player currently has.
Iron Helmet - "Classes" - When clicked, it executes the /class command. Opens the class selection menu.
Barrier - "Toggle Notifs" - When clicked, it executes the /notif command. Toggles instakill notifications on or off.

    • Class Selection Message

When a player spawn in or chooses a class, they will get a message on their actionbar saying what class they have selected and to use /help to learn the class's abilities.
    The message looks as follows:
    And so on.

    • Default flag display message moved

The default flag display message should be moved to the actionbar to prevent new player's screens being potentially spammed by capture, recover, and stolen messages.

I believe these changes are needed in order to help new players become more accustomed to the gamemode quicker and allowing the playerbase to grow. Ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Your typical noob doesn't like reading. Add some sort of visual tutorial to make it more engaging.

What is CTF's "downfall" is a lack of class updates and, when we do get those updates, they have tended to be nerfs.

Since when was anyone excited about "class balancing"? Class balancing is about as exciting as a bowl of dried onions.

Also it's funny you mention engineer as one of CTF's problems with noob friendliness because it's one of the easiest classes to play/get kills with. I mean you can literally place a turret, get something to eat, come back five minutes later and find that you've got a 5-10 killstreak. How is that not noob friendly?

+1 would love to see this added -- although how to turn off these notifications should be widely available info. so people don't get their chat spammed

I like the idea but the icon should just be a book instead of a banner for clarity

also if we don't have a /help command already, we really should

that said... all this stuff is fine but it might be better to have an in game tutorial of some sort, or just give every class a book in its hotbar that tells you how to play it (which we used to have), instead of a bunch of icons which is a little tedious/confusing to navigate

I mostly agree with what admiral said, however with the display message, I'd like to have it like the flag thingy
aka the player being able to set it to chat only / screen display / chat and screen

Lack of updates will lose the playerbase we already have, making it hard for new players to understand the gamemode will lose more new players than gain. Both of these issues will have a negative outcome if nothing is done about it, so I'm only focusing about 1 here.

Engineer is premium so new people can't just set up a turret whenever (unless freeday) and newcomers most likely don't understand how engineer works. They can't get near it almost at all with the turret doing constant dmg along with the kb pick. Along with not understanding teleporters and the regenerator and not knowing that they can break these said structures.
Nonetheless, this isn't about engineer. I just put that in there more or less as a joke.

It says how to disable the messages each time it is displayed so I'm pretty sure it will be widely known.

I feel we should focus on making the developers stay before tackling the newcomers.

Then you try to break them...? I mean you remember 80% of what you do versus like, 20% of what you read. It's not completely irrelevant from CTF

    anyway that's getting off topic

    Yeah I'm dumb, +1

I'd be fine with this or a book for each class.

    What developers? lol

I think this Is a really good idea but it needs some work. Hopefully we see a version of it in game soon!

Honestly, the reason CTF isn't noob friendly is because of regulars. The skill differential is very hard to overcome and teamwork and coordination make a big difference. In small games with 10 or so people, a team with 2 regulars runs away with the game. Having no measurable impact on the game isn't fun and likely these players won't return.

I absolutely support a help menu and useful tips to help newcomers, but not understanding what getting sniped means, while annoying, isn't as bad as never being able to land a shot yourself.

I don't have a good solution; regulars will invariably be better than most new players, but continuing to stifle growth isn't good for the future of the game mode.

I don't see why not. It's perfectly simple to get info this way, the assassin block and archer hs thing is nice, it's helpful and useful, I'd like to see this added. +1 from me!
