What is the exact reason we ain't 1.9+ yet?

    I honestly think the biggest reason why people play 1.8 is because of the servers being 1.8 if there was a copy of brawl and that copy is 1.9+ (with the 1.8 pvp system) I bet most people would switch to 1.9+ just because it's unique with the new features and blocks.
    You could see this as a gap in the market if you work it out properly.
    But that's my opinion tho.

    Brawl isn't on 1.9 and above due to the platform (custom server jar) we use. It's not fear of losing players, its incompatibility with what we have and it is a very difficult fix that will take a long time. If we updated without getting the gamemodes off the dependencies from that jar, everything would break. It's an unfortunate situation.

    It's indeed an unfortunate situation.
    And it will take a lot of time and effort to simply update everything.
    But I think there is a way if we try in little steps?
    I don't really see that staying at 1.8.9 forever is a solid solution.
    At some point either other servers will update. Or the gap between new stuff and 1.8.9 stuff becomes too big.
    I think that brawl should take the lead in this process. Because at some point we will die as a community and I'm sure nobody wants that.

    Better take that "gap in the market" now than giving it away to other servers first.

    Filling a gap in the market is not always a good idea. Not to mention, there's already a decent amount of 1.9 servers out there; they're just all very unpopular, so you don't hear about them.

    The largest Minecraft server which has 1.9 features is Wynncraft, which isn't a PvP server, and even then they still have 1.8 support. The majority of players are still on 1.8, so upgrading past 1.8 makes no sense.

    You don't just find a gap in the market and think "Yep, let's do this then". You've got to see if anyone's interested in someone filling that gap in the market. Very few people are interested in 1.9+ features compared to the amount of people who want to stay on 1.8, so it makes no sense in utilising 1.9+ features.

    The only way we'll ever be able to make a transition between 1.8 and 1.9 is if we're able to grow again, build up a decent reputation and be a big enough force to do something revolutionary and not have everyone leave for other servers as a result, which is pretty optimistic. 1.9+ support isn't happening for a while.

    I've seen a server in particular that can handle both 1.8 and 1.9+ compatibility amazingly well for both pvp and building. They have arenas with 1.7 pvp made out of 1.12 blocks and yet, can be played in any version. It's astonishing how well it works.
    I've brought up this server within staff chat but it seems the server keeps this magic under lockdown so unless by some miracle we discover how they harmonize 1.7/1.8 with 1.9+ so perfectly we'll most likely never update to 1.9+ unfortunately.
