CTF Website Suggestion

Hey all, I’ve been thinking about some problems with CTF and what the best way to go about fixing them would be. After a bit of research I thought it might be a great idea to setup a website entirely dedicated to CTF. This might perhaps run alongside the stats page, but I don’t know how well it could be integrated with Xenforo. For now we’ll call it Flagpost.

Flagpost revolves around three main sections: Achievements, Rankings and Profiles. Other features will come into play but these are all linked together and form the basis of the website.

Achievements

This has been discussed before but it’s worth repeating because it’s a great idea. People mostly enjoy achievements because it’s fun to satisfy a goal, but there’s several more reasons, and many ways to implement it. Here’s a few:

• Basic Achievements, such as healing 1000 people with Medic.
• Periodic Achievements, such as having the most caps with Ninja that month.
• Global Achievements, such as the entire server collectively reaching 1 million kills.

Achievements can help to guide new players, and add another dimension of gameplay for those who might feel like the game is getting stale.

Profiles

Achievements are meaningless if you can’t show them off, which brings us onto profiles. Profiles act as a display case for everything relating to your account on CTF. This includes Achievements, and would ideally integrate the existing CTF stats page. Aside from that, they’re endlessly customisable and can make even further use of Achievements by using them as conditions to earn unlockables.

Profile pictures, backgrounds, badges, titles and so on could all be unlocked through the completion of a certain task, or by spending credits. Messages and posts from Brawl could show up on your profile. It’s a very rich area of discussion and definitely worth exploring further.

Ranking

Strictly speaking, it’s not a ranking but more of a personal CTF score. One reason for this is that it allows for levels and ranks (i.e. bronze, silver, gold), which I’ve always enjoyed and I think would be fun to include. It also means that you don’t burn out or stress about staying on a leaderboard (though they’re still on the stats page if you want to see them!).

The main reason for it, though, is that it directly ties in with credits. You receive credits for completing objectives in-game, so it makes sense to include them with the same scaling in your personal score. You’re already able to see how much you’ve earned after a match, and now they affect your ranking as well. It means that credits have an actual use beyond unlocking classes.

Teams

The final thing I want to talk about is teams. I’m not big on the teams scene but here’s a few things I thought could be added:

• Accessible team schedules
• Team profiles
• Team name on your own profile

Rankings play a part too, since you have a concrete measure of a person’s skill. As I say I’m not exactly the authority on this, but it’s a big part of CTF and we could definitely do some cool stuff with it.

I think Flagpost would be great for CTF. It has the potential to have lots of other stuff added to it, and it fixes the problem of useless credits. But I really want to know if you guys like it too, since without your support it’ll be difficult to convince the higher ups that there’s a demand for it. Whether you like the idea or not, please take a second to vote in the poll above. Yep, that would be ideal, I just wonder if xenforo would limit the amount of stuff you could put on there.
