I'm actually friends with the owner of a Greek restaurant here in town. I was told there was a time where he had to go back to Greece for military service. Is this a mandatory thing for all males?

Yes. Every male over 18 has to attend the military. If they study on a college they have the right to not go to the military until their courses are over. Then they go to the military for about 9 months or a year.

Your position at the army is not chosen by you. It is random. You will either become a trooper, a tank driver, a pilot or a seaman.

After your first two months of training you have the right to either stay there for another 7 months or sign and join the Special Forces where you get a special type of training.

There's a system like that here in America, but you aren't required to serve. You do have to be registered with the military at age 18 though.

In the Marines you get to choose your job for the most part. There are infantry, mechanized infantry, artillery and air crews that work as landing forces. There are also Marine Recon teams and a MARSOC division for special operations and sometimes black ops

Most of the special stuff gets handed off to army Rangers/Delta Force operators and Navy SEAL steams though.

Military in USA seems more interesting.

Considering a decent chunk of it is used as an international police force, things get weird. Warfare these days has evolved into who had the best special forces though. Conventional stuff is being slowly edged out of the picture.
