You need to put money into steam before you can use the market. The lowest amount of money you can buy for steam is $5.
Now, you can sign up for one of those websites that let you watch ads and do surveys for money, although quite boring. You need a PayPal though.

There is some item you can give your friends that changes there account to premium

You have a steam f2p account. You need to put money into steam, buy something, and wait 30 days before you can sell on the market.

Premium players get to trade, have more backpack space, can get cosmetic and rare items, etc.

I can't tell if I have that. I think I can trade, cuz it said if I clicked on @Xenotaph 's name I could trade with him. But I don't remember paying anything. My brother probably did. He's the one who got the game.

F2p accounts can trade, but they can only trade items that were traded to them. Trading is built into Steam. TF2 is what restricts you from trading your items that you earned.

An example is that if I gave you a soda popper for free, you can trade that for other items. You can not add any items that you have obtained though.
