Depends on file format. Max file size for .png files is 50kb (or 140x140) and .jpeg files have no size limit. png has better quality and less artifacts, so I use it.

I also use PNG. But whenever I try switching to another picture, it says that the 'size' is too big.

I always change it to jpeg and make the image itself smaller in paint or paint.net.

It isn't that bad. The cats are pretty clean for the most time. The dogs, however, can be very dirty at times.
