Isn't it molding to censor words that were made negative solely by society? You yourself even said people use them "for no purpose" and "as if they're the norm". How is that a bad thing necessarily?

Swearing doesn't mean insulting. I can insult very easily with or without swearing, so it seems rather redundant to watch your usage of a few select words rather than your attitude.

Swearing is often used to emphasize an insult, and it works pretty well in my opinion.

Swearing has always been negative to society, and I don't think there is any way it can be changed. Because of this, I wouldn't want my young kids to be using those words as such.

    Fair enough.

Ah, and here we get into an interesting perspective, one that I think about a little bit. It's a bit deep for a forum conversation, but think about this:
What makes swear words bad? If you were raised in a family that thought that the word 'pineapple' was bad, wouldn't you be equally as offended or confused when people used the word pineapple in casual conversation? If we start lending a negative connotation to the word 'pineapple', then stop using the word or ban it from our vocabularies, does that make pineapple a bad word?

It's a bit of a stretch, but bringing it back in, wouldn't you think that raising kids in an environment where people avoid the word actively lend more credence to the notion that the word is a bad word, and thus, make them more likely to use it than in areas where the word is used more casually like any other word?

*Note that we're exiting the range of conversation about swear filters and are entering the realm of societal norms. If you'd like to return to brawl-based conversation, press pound now.*

    Edit: Yeh, what @Tenshirox said.

But why are you denouncing swearing when the real effort should be denouncing insults? Swears can be used as an adverb or adjective, so its obviously can be used for emphasis but they aren't exclusive to insults.

Sorry if I'm coming off as pushy, I've a fancy for debating.

Ok, but blocking them on brawl will not stop them from learning the word. I learned the f bomb from random conversation I heard when I was like 3. All you're doing with censorship on brawl is reinforcing the idea that swears should be used in negative situations, instead of shielding them from swears.

No kid will ever remain innocent forever. And, arguably, they're not exposed to enough of the world if they do.

Besides, I can be just as rude when I tell people to go die violently in a hole as I can telling somebody to go f' themselves. There's so many variations to insults, why focus on a few specific words?

Society is the way it is, and it's very hard to change. We all need to understand it. Swear words are swear words, and they work the way they do because that's just society. Brawl reflects on society's standards.

    *Presses pound* XD

All kids are raised to learn that swear words aren't tolerable at such an age. If Brawl were to be a server to change that norm, in which the child demonstrates this to the parents, what's left of it? If I was a parent, I'd most likely ban him/her from Brawl, or from the computer in general. This causes the server to lose one more player.

Flaming is against Brawl rules. We are making efforts to go against this.

And if you say those things, it's considered flame, which also happens to be against Brawl's rules.

Just because its a norm doesn't mean its correct, as has been proven many times in our past

You are right. But norms are norms, and what's right and wrong is irrelevant in the minds of parents, and I think we both know that. *rolls eyes.*
I'm sure most parents swear, and most have sworn since they were a kid. But they were most likely afraid of their parents over-hearing them as well.
In the end, their just trying to do what's right for their child - and hey, they want them to stay innocent, they want them to still be their little princess or little monster - whatever the name may be.

Yes, we will obviously never change the standards of society by having a (yay flame free) argument on an isolated corner of the internet. That's pretty indisputable XD. My (and apparently tenshirox's, hi tenshi <3) point is that by enforcing censorship, you're re-enforcing norms that really don't need to exist. I can use swears in positive lights too, which I would demonstrate if you'd accept it as a demonstration. Swears are not inherently negative.

You get my humour. I like you.

You know, I would never want Brawl to stop being kid friendly. But the issue is, by being kid friendly, you're isolating A LOT of teens. I know that I would be banned on the games, along with many of my friends from MCPVP. By 'protecting' the apparently few virgin chillin's (I call children chillin's, young'uns, younglings, etc. Just roll with it), ears, which I know are few by your own admission, you're losing another large portion of your playerbase, one that's much more likely to be profitable in the long run. Look at me talking like you're head admin or something XD

Which, again, brings up segregated servers. If you've got servers that are kid-friendly, you'd be able to keep them appeased and retain the image of Brawl in the eyes of both the swearhappy teens and the parentals. That seems more win win to me.

Well darn, that means I can't be here anymore. I'm too hot for this server.

Which makes sense. Again, not arguing the rules, more the reasoning.

Aah, it feels good to have my signature again. Thanks nom!

Chat filter. It's an extremely common thing to have on a Minecraft server. It's not like having a swear word blocked out from the chat is going to dissuade teenagers from playing on the server. Do you think that a server with a chat that contains curse words upon curse words is going to be a place that you would like to play on? Why would you want to come onto a server for the first time and see profanities just pooling out of the chat? Would you think that the community of that server is a decent one if that is all they see? Community plays an important role on deciding if a server is worth someone's time or not. If one is greeted with friendly words, they are more likely to stay. If greeted with flat out curse words and arguments in chat, they might not stay for a long time. Though it is not something that is very pleasing to the eyes, having the word starred out is much better than just having the word. At the same time, it would be a bummer if the parent looked over, glanced at the chat, and just saw swear words. They would absolutely love their child playing on that, right? Often times, parents do not have a positive outlook on swear words. Sure, you might live in a household that does not care about them, that's fine, but not every household is like that. 9 times out of 10, the parents care. It is not just teenagers on this server. We wouldn't even lose them. Why would we lose players over a chat filter?

Do not argue with staff members. That is simply respect. This rule goes with the "do not talk back" rule that most, if not all, teachers follow. No, staff member are not teachers, but they are people who have authority over you. This goes with staff members. They do indeed have authority over you. Why, you don't even have to talk to them. The only time you might be forced to talk to them is when they ask you something first. If they ask you to stop doing something, that is when this rule comes into play. What would happen if you talked back to a teacher, if you argued with them? Punishment of course. This goes for staff as well, believe it or not. Common courteous would think that they would simply do as said without a problem. But some want to argue, fuss, and create a big deal about something. And in the end not stop what they are doing. Punishment, whether it be a mute, kick, or temporary ban, would then occur to stop what they were doing with force. Do not argue with staff members is a respect rule. It is as simple as that.

Honestly, you just need to adapt to us now. Things are different now. You might not like these new rules, I'm sorry, but you must follow them. They are not complex, I promise. You should be able to fit in perfectly fine.

The chat filter is neccisarry. Yeah sure, even the younger ones know many swear words, most people do. But for most people, probably excluding you two, it isn't ok that someone is swearing at us. Or at anybody else for that matter. Just because you know about something, doesn't mean it's ok. I therefore support @Striker_Sly this time. And also, I don't care what you had at MCPVP, and if you suddenly just logged on and found yourself here rather than there. But the matter of fact is, no one is forcing you to play brawl. However, if you've made the decision to play here, you've got to follow our rules. And if us triyng to prevent the community getting too toxic by appliyng a chat filter is such a massive problem to you, either learn to live with it or leave

And as we're here we have a right to voice our opinions as well. Baws and I already stated we know the chat filter wont be changed*, we both just have an affinity to pointless debate.

Haha I've seen lots of discussions that are a lot more pointless than this. And this is the off-topic section anyways. This is the place to post all your pointless shananagans.

And yeah, you have the right to voice your opinions as long as you do it in an appropriate manner, which you managed to do.

Dissuaded a pretty significant portion of the remaining MCPVP community, me included.

Funnily enough, I'd rather play on that server than a censored one. Note, I'd still like a moderated one. Why do you assume that decensoring curse words would automatically fill the chat with nothing but curse words? Couldn't a mod solve that if it were to occur?

Again, do you know something I don't about the chat here? Because you make it seem like not having a censor would result in nothing but swear words. I wouldn't want to play on a server that was inundated by swears, even if they WERE censored. There's a difference between the type of accentuating swearing we're referencing and not the type of out of control swearfest you seem to be.

Yes, that would be. I can't even deny that. I'm not even a parent and I'd be saddened by nothing but swears.
Again, if you want a parent friendly server, you're not going to do well with the rebellious teenagers who are more likely to spend their money. PC =/= $$ on the internet.

Where'dja get that statistic? I'd like to see it. However, I get your drift, a lot of parents care about their kids.
Segregated servers. If your kiddie playerbase is so great that you have to add chat filters for them specifically, they're probably big enough for their own kid friendly servers. That would also allow for the kids to have their own age group to play against, as well as bringing in more teens (which, by all the teens I know, AS A TEEN, would be pretty major) by not restricting their style of play. Does this mean no moderation? No, obviously you'd still warn the offending people. But swears used in chat, unless targeted, would not be punished.
Or maybe it would. Maybe the Brawl central playerbase all share your opinion. I'unno, I've been here like 3 days.

ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

I'm sorry, no. I'd be OK with that if we were here by choice, but it's been like 3 days. A lot of us followed the game mode after it was pulled out from underneath our feet. We would have just as easily gone to Mineplex or Hive if they had bought us. I like that you guys want to have a nice community, I don't like that it's created via force.
I'm sure we'll be OK with your rules, trust me. But don't say 'always follow the rules you don't like'. We should always be allowed to argue points.

    Pointless debate is my lifeblood.

Saying we are trying to make a nice community by force is blowing it waaay out of porportion. Some rules are standard on every server, including us. No swearing and insulting is one of the most commonly found rules. And you are one of very few people that aren't going to play Brawl because the fact that we censor swearing. Not most of the MCPVP players as you stated. You might like that everyone can throw out multiple swear words whenever they feel like it, but trust me, most people don't. Not even the 13+ players. And please tell me where we ever said you aren't allowed to argue your points.

Yeah, you're right, I don't actually care if people swear at me.

Both you and Rainy make it seem like not having a censor will result in nothing BUT swearwords. Is the brawl community that toxic?
By that note, does having somebody direct a bunch of asterisks at you really lessen the blow if you know what they imply? It seems to me that making the asterisks makes it more obvious that people are swearing than the actual swear word, because **** stands out more than damn the word itself.

I personally dislike people getting offended on my behalf MORE than I dislike things people generally consider offensive.

You're right. In attempting to protect a portion of your playerbase, why not exclude a portion of your playerbase? That sounds legit.

Nah, I get that we should follow your rules. However, can we be allowed to argue them?

Not only that, but CTF the game is, bluntly, absolute garbage. When Brawl bought CTF, they didn't buy a profitable gamemode, they bought a community. Don't exclude that community, it's all that you guys inherited.

Oh, and I don't speak for all of MCPVP here, clearly. But still, telling us to leave so blantantly isn't exactly going to help your growth.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AND CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE MAKE IT EASIER TO QUOTE INDIVIDUAL PARTS?
It was like the only good thing about discourse that I miss, TBH.

But you are here by choice. We arent forcing you to play on our server, if you dont agree with our rules you can just as easily go to another server. Sure it might not have your favorite gamemode but youre definitely not forced to be here.

Censorship is force. That's, like, a part of what makes it censorship. You can't have censorship that doesn't force something upon something.

    True. Can't even deny that.

Ok, so let's clear this up: I'm not going to play because I dislike minecraft in general. Not because of the censorship. I'd still technically play, but I'd complain a lot :stuck_out_tongue:

I know a lot of players on the MCPVP server. You lost a lot of us, trust me.

I don't want people swearing non stop, where did I ever say that? I don't even want people insulting people, that's just generally rude behaviour and I'm sorry if that's how I came across. However, censoring swearing still bugs me so much because swears can be used for more than just insults.

I'm actually starting to dislike this 'follow our rules or get out' attitude I've been finding here, too. Compromise is brilliant, guys.

Bolded and highlighted, sounds like adapt or leave to me.

Were not excluding a portion of the community. We are only saying that players that are unwilling to follow the very basic rules of ours aren't welcome. Neither I or @Rainys are saying that every message is going to be swearing. We are saying that many of the messages will be. No, the community isn't that toxic currently, but it will be without a chat filter. Both me and @Rainys have been here for a substantually longer time than you, and we know what this community is like and it's tendencies much better than you do.

So yeah, a chat filter is necisarry. If you can deal with it, then great! However, if you can't, that's your problem, and yours only

Again, personally, I'm here for the debate and not so much the game.
I also enjoy playing devil's advocate, especially when the devil's points are valid and he offers me ice cream.

"No, the community isn't that toxic currently, but it will be without a chat filter."
Something from that quote got deleted, but it's from Rezreq. So, larger font.

You're right, I've not been here as long as you guys. If you say the community would devolve to nothing but insults, I believe you.

Still, those insults are entirely possible without censors. Again, why does 'damn' or words like it offend you but **** does not, even when **** is implied to be 'damn'?
