How should the flag be changed?

  1. Have banners sit on fence posts

    Hey guys,

As you all know, banners have replaced the fence post with a floating wool block. They are easier to see and flag carriers can be found more efficiently. What they cannot do though is stopping you from passing through them.

Why is this even an issue?
Since the merge with Brawl, CTF games are up to 70 players again, which causes the flag rooms to have more players in than usual. Most people entering an enemy flag room are immediately met with a whole bunch of swords of all kinds and get tossed around the room until they die. Having banners does not help this, in fact, trying to bring your player onto the flag spot and waiting there to steal it has become much more difficult as you can be knocked through the flag.
The fence post however made it a little easier to run to the flag. You would notice when you are inside the flag steal radius and would not immediately get knocked away. Defenders also had the chance to keep you behind the fence post to hinder your escape.

Unfortunately, banners take up a full block, so placing the old fence post inside the banner does not work. They can attach to invisible barrier blocks, but that makes the flag only accessible from three sides. After some testing, this could be a possible solution:

Placing a banner on a fence post works pretty well, although it makes the overall flag structure three blocks high. These are examples for banners in flag rooms placed on a fence:

    Castle Wars:

    Desert Strike:

    Kill Creek:

To be honest, it doesn't look all that bad. What do you think?

This isn't that much of a bad idea. Heck, this could get implemented right now.

Also: Am I the only one where, who is a bit salty about the entire 'banner as flag' thing?

Very nice idea! I was going to think of a complicated idea about floating Banners on top of the original Wool Fences about 20 blocks high so it could be easier... never mind it's complicated and unneeded... +1 from me!

I liiiiiiiiike! Do this. Please. I like the look of the banners, but the fencepost's hitbox is hugely useful.

Looks pretty high up...but I assume it'll work nonetheless!

Maybe we could just use wool still.

I prefer this more than the current banner placement but overall I think the wool is the best way to go. If this gets added, I'll be a lot more pleased but I feel that the wool is the best option.

no thanks. cuz of the banners hitbox it makes ninja capping really difficult, you can't pearl while you are inside the banner. adding the banner on top of the flag just makes it even harder to do that. i would just stick with the wool entity on a flag post

Why can't we have the wool block back?

If everyone wants wool so badly couldn't there just be separate servers for these? Unneeded but seeing how badly you guys want it...

Yeah b/c of the hitbox you can't block with your sword either.

What would be the steal radius?

I personally really like it! Although I do think that having the banner entity on a flagpost would be the best thing to do at this point, I don't see that happening anytime soon. +1 to this!

Put a barrier in the top half of the banner! I made a post about this on the "about banners" thread. (Link is here!)

That would be too much of a hassle, and the player base on each server would lower. =/

Saw that post and tried it, but as mentioned the banner takes up a whole block (so no block can be placed "inside" of it) and attaching it to one side makes it float and only accessible from three sides. =(

I think he means placing the barrier on top of the banner (it is possible with fire and cobwebs so it probably works), and then they would only have to extend the pickup radius

If it'll make the server's community stop *****ing, I'm all in for it. In fact, I think this is an improvement to the flag's appearance.

It doesn't even resemble a flag. The banner with a fence looks a lot simpler to do too.
