First off, let me make this clear: I don't care what you say or do outside of the game as long as it's not seriously hurting others physically, emotionally, or otherwise. If you're raging in a Skype call with your friends because, for example, you're having a bad time in WarZ and are blowing off some steam then good for you. That's none of my business and I have zero interest in making that my business. We all rage, I get it. Sometimes that's just how the cookie crumbles and it's 100% natural.

But I care a great deal when you or anyone else is deliberately threatening or actively attacking someone in game or just being toxic overall. You've taken your problem and spread it all over the chat and now it's everyone's problem including mine. This is particularly the case with DDoS (which is illegal) and death threats, both of which I think are some of the more serious chat rule violations out there, as well as linking or spamming 18+ content. Sidenote: I get that sometimes people say 'kys' or make a crude sex joke for the funneh's and I do it to. I'm not suggesting a harsher punishment for any of that other than joking about DDoS or posting 18+ content for the LOLs. There's a whole world of humor out there that doesn't pertain to DDoS or posting/linking pornographic content.

That said, people who do post death and/or DDoS threats and 18+ content because they're desperate for attention or are genuinely that messed up are getting (in my view) somewhat lenient bans. In a few hours or a week they're back at it with their behavior and I have zero sympathy for it. People who post this kind of crap in chat add some completely unnecessary drama and sometimes genuinely hurt feelings to gamemodes where the chat tends to be pretty benign (like CTF) and multiplies the toxicity in gamemodes such as WarZ.

DDoS threats, posting 18+ content, and death threats are not only stupid, completely unnecessary, illegal (DDoS), but are also morally and ethically wrong. There is no reason why any Minecraft chat should have death/DDoS threats or any seriously inappropriate links or comments at any time. You want to be toxic in your Skype or Discord chats with your friends? Fine, not my deal so you do you. If you get arrested for spreading child porn or threatening DDoS that's your deal. Learn from it. Sure I or anyone else could do /ignore when someone starts spamming sexually explicit content or death threats but that's not dealing with the problem is it? It's ignoring the problem, that's the whole point of the command. People who are so immature that they think it'd be worthwhile to threaten people or post porn in a Minecraft chat (of all places) at any time for any reason (i.e. anger, attention) deserve a much harsher punishment than is currently being given. Oh you can't handle the toxicity? they might say, Too bad. Deal with it this is the internet.

That's the most bullsh*t excuse I've ever heard. So because plenty of other people are immature that somehow makes what you're doing OK? Listen to yourself.

There are actual kids who play on Brawl and, I know, some things come off as much more serious at a younger age than they do later on. Hell when I was playing McPVP at 14 (I'm 19) I cried over some nasty message another McPVP'er sent me for whatever reason. We don't know what threats can mean to people we encounter on the internet, because 9/10 times we have no idea who they are. And believe it or not there is such a thing as learned behavior where toxic environments will tend to make the players in them more toxic. Basic psychology. This isn't just about death/DDoS threats and 18+ content but also about general nastiness, especially from players who seem to think it's funny, just another little game.

I'm sure higher level staff are aware of that situation and so this is what I propose:

Empower J-MODs (not Trial MODs) to...
    • issue 3 hour mutes for excessive rudeness/swearing/flame/racism etc instead of 1 hour. More than 3 mutes for this behavior within a period of 1 day leads to an immediate 72 hour mute.
    • issue 24 hour mutes for 18+ content, and 12 hours for death threats (because 'kys' tends to be used as a joke). More than three mutes for any of the above within a period of 1 day leads to an immediate 7 day ban.
    • issue 24 hour ban for anyone making DDoS threats and referral to higher staff. Repeated DDoS threats = perma-ban.
    • ban users for any of the above for 3 hours instead of 1 on TeamSpeak.
Extend the ban for death threats from 1 week to 2.
Extend the ban for DDoS threats from 1 week to 1 month.
Improve appeals system (better define what "sufficient evidence" is).

If you /chatreport a death wish (kys) or any other form of extreme harassment, the offender gets a 12 hour mute instead of an hour one.
Death, DDoS, and any other threats get a week long ban.

For what is insufficient. Examples being:
    1. Caps; for this to be accepted, it has to be 3 FULL lines of caps
    2. Language/swearing; it has to be excessive or used abusively.
    3. I've seen reports for disrespect being 'player is trash' or 'player is ez.' Personally I'm not going to mute for that

I really do agree with this. People do tend to make jokes in places where they're not being very serious, like for instance playing a game of minecraft. There is of course a limit to what should be considered a joke. Sure, a lot of jokes can be considered offensive or insulting to other people, but there has to be a line drawn where an offensive joke becomes downright wrong. Brawl already treats any kind of DDoS threat as something serious, and that's a good thing. It is an illegal practise, and regardless of whether it's a joke or not, joking about an illegal practise is definitely something you don't want to encourage.

Death threats are even worse than DDoS. Unlike the latter, this has the potential for some really nasty consequences. I'm bewildered as to why someone would even say something like this seriously, but whatever the reason, the punishments definitely aren't serious enough because people are still doing it. This should not exist anywhere

Minecraft is a game which kids are allowed to play, it's aimed at kids. A lot of older players tend to play it as well, but kids still make up the majority of players. This kind of behaviour shouldn't be encouraged under any circumstances, and right now and I agree with @SquishyTrump that the punishments aren't harsh enough. A lot of the time stuff isn't nearly as bad as some of the harsher rule breaks we see on here, but toxic behaviour is everywhere. I see it on CTF all the time. I think it's about time something stronger was done about it.

And just because this is the internet doesn't mean we should just "deal with it". That's the mentality that allows them to carry on doing what they shouldn't be in the first place

You stated to give JMods extra perms and not trials.

Trial is JMod, the during a trial period you only receive your rank on the server you applied for.
So my question is, will this be added to the JMods that only have their ranks on 1 server.
Because technically, "Trial Mod" doesn't exist :stuck_out_tongue:

AND SINCE WHEN DOES TRUMP HAVE GOOD IDEAS!?!?!?!?!?!?

Trial JMods cannot resolve chat reports, while full JMods can.

Isn't that because they don't have their perms on any other server, thus they can't reply to those.
Would they be able to resolve reports coming from their server itself?

I should also mention that JMods cannot tempban for threats and cannot mute for advertising. That is left up to Mods considering those violations require heavy punishments.
Threats require a 7 day ban, and advertising requires a year long mute.

They cannot resolve chat reports from their assigned server. That's not how the system works. Plus, Trials are just starting out on their duty.

Harsher punishments for DDoSers won't really achieve anything long-term. This community just breeds more DDoSers and ragers every day. Unless people start taking it seriously, nothing will change.

Disagree. You can get arrested for DDoS and death threats (as well as spreading porn with underage actors). People who perpetrate that kind of stuff got taken more seriously instead of getting a slap on the wrist (as one player did when they got a 1 hour mute for 18+ content. One hour) and continuing their behavior. I'm suggesting these changes for the exact same reason(s) that @Lord_Roke and Brawl imposed the Continuous Rule Violations measures. Why should people who contribute nothing to the community but hate, threats, and even criminal activities be given as much leeway as they are now? JMODs should be able to do more to deal with this.

Because a lot of those ragers and DDoS'ers get a lot of attention for doing what they do. At least two CTF'ers who (more or less) fit that description come to mind. One of them is now permabanned after 84 mutes (at least two for death threats and one for 18+), 44 bans, and 13 kicks. Another faked his own death to get attention, threatened others, and flamed on a regular basis. They could continue their behavior because they weren't getting seriously punished for it. A 1 hour mute for 18+? A 7 day ban for death threats? Are you kidding me?

I don't know if you read the thread but I take DDoS, death threats, and 18+ very seriously. We just disagree on what to do about it.

Not talking about you. I'm talking about high staff members (admin+). When I was admin no one cared about who were DDoSing and who weren't. Allegations weren't taken seriously in any condition.

No one made conscious attempts to track down and ban alternates. Long-time DDoSers and even infamous hackers were eventually forgiven and rewarded for their "reformation." Look at how many ex-hackers and ex-DDoSers became staff over the years.

Harsher punishments in this climate won't change anything. The only thing that will change the community is having a strict zero-tolerance policy for DDoSing. And with the player count Brawl has right now, can it even afford to dump players like that? Hard to say.

As far as death threats go I think the current punishment is strict enough. It's the punishment for repeated offenses that need to be addressed. You shouldn't need 42 warnings before realizing that what you're doing isn't okay.

Is that really a rule? Just wonderin'

I believe that DDoS/Death threats are the worse thing you could say in chat. And people shouldn't be bullied into submission when they're just trying to play the game. And I do agree with @SquishyTrump saying we should empower JMods. Saying 'ez' or something along the lines of that is player disrespect, and should be punishable for. Doing this might actually let them enjoy the gamemode rather than look forth to disrespect Some more players.

Thanks for the info. Really appreciate the clarification + perspective.

I wouldn't mind a zero tolerance policy on DDoS.

I don't think it is. You can get a harsher punishment for less in LoL.

    That too ^^
