The only reasons a class should exist are that a) it fulfils a niche competitive purpose and b) it's fun

Mage sucks competitively, there's always other classes that can play a particular role better than it can

It might be fun to play as but it's horrible to play against, to the point of being very frustrating and detracting from the game experience

A good Mage is unapproachable in a 1v1, so the best thing to do is just avoid them, but it would be easier to just remove the class since the only thing they're good at (random killing) is completely useless to the game

TLDR it has no purpose and it's a fun sponge

    Remove pls

The reason for mage still being here:
The mage is a strong and powerful species. Their knowledge has no end and they just keep on learning more and more. They are skillful in the ways of magic and are able to do what is needed to survive in a moments notice.

No honestly though. They are kind of annoying in a 1v1 I agree

If its removal your looking for, I'm afraid that's not happening. Classes don't get removed (ok, Fashionista kind of did but Fashionista is special), and Imo Mage can be good competitively if used correctly...

I'd hardly say mage has no purpose. Mage is a jack-of-all trades class, master of none, yet somewhat useful in all.
Mage fills both! :grinning:DD It's quite useful competitively, and it's fun to play!

Have you ever played a match against aefrogdog? Or chikincows? Or how about KRiderClei? If you have, then you would know that mage is extremely useful in matches, which is arguably the most competitive version of CTF (I would know, being in the Team System for over 2 and a half years by now).

Offense - Although hampered by it's inability to block, mage is still very useful for shooting enemies away from the flagpost and freezing the pyro. TC and numerous other teams have used this strategy successfully. It's ability to simply antagonize a flagroom with it's infinite healthpool is infamous.

Defense - How do you beat an organized offense? You tear them to shreds before they reach the flagroom! Mage excels at separating and singling out players, destroying coordination.

      • Damage Spell - Has the range that no other melee class has, allowing you to hit players from farther distances without risking yourself
      • Flame Spell - Quite useful when the pyro has too little time to pull back their bow or missed a player when using his/her bow or fns
      • Lightning Spell - Need I say more? Helps push people away from the flagroom and flagpost!
      • Freeze Spell - If your defense needs a breather in the middle of a hard push of offense, freezing one of the offenders in the flagroom often helps the defense reorient themselves, and it also allows them to focus on the other players for a few seconds
      • Healing Spell - Who needs a medic when you have mage regen?
Mage's ability to hit invis ninjas is also quite useful when checking for those perky ghosters and premature pearlers.

Recovery - Mage is very useful on recovery, with its spells giving mage numerous ways to screw with the support (looking at you @aefrogdog ). You can separate the medic and flagcarrier with lightning, or freeze one and stall the heal. Or if you're lucky, you can lightning them into spawn / void (which has been done in official matches before). Simply being able to hit numerous freezes on the flagcarrier allows recov to reorganize and catch up to the flagcarrier. @Slayway did a wonderful job of freezing the flagcarrier multiple times in a match against Defy (unfortunately they were unable to get the recov, but my point still stands).

Support - Is there nothing mage isn't semi-decent at? Mage's support skills are nothing to joke about. Being able to heal the flagcarrier while constantly putting more and more distance between them and the recov is invaluable. Most other classes would be forced to go into close quarters 1v1 combat with the recov, either separating themselves from the flagcarrier who needs their support, or bringing the recov closer, allowing them more chances to recov. However, mage is able to stall them at a distance while keeping pace with the flagcarrier. Of course, this isn't a job mage can do alone, but it is quite useful nonetheless.

What do you mean by horrible? Do you mean unfun to play against? Is getting 2 shotted by heavies and ninjas not very frustrating and detracting from the game experience? What about having 5 engineers or 5 dwarfs? Or how about assassin and archer's instakill? Oooo we could even go as far to say that every class can get to the point of being frustrating and detracting from the game experience. Obviously, you will have classes that are fun and not fun to play against. Is mage unfun for me to play against? Yes, depending on who the mage is and what class I am. Is heavy unfun to play against? Yes, if I'm a ninja or pyro. Is assassin unfun for me to play against? Yes, if I'm mage.

I'm not saying mage is completely easy to kill. I know that playing against a good mage can be very difficult, seeing as it's the only (effective) mid-range class (other than engineer) compared to the rest of the short range / long range classes.

My point is that, yes, some classes are unfun to play against, but that doesn't mean that we should remove them simply because it's annoying for some. There are 13 classes from which you can pick and choose from. Heck, you have 14 classes to choose from. Find a class that can easily kill mage, or learn, like I did, how to kill them off easily. Is it a bit unfair for beginners? Yes. Is it possible to learn how to overcome mages? Yes. I wouldn't call myself a bad mage, but I wouldn't call myself the best either. I'm a decent mage, and my KDR is usually terrible.

I can't face November or Scape or Hallo in a chemist 1v1. Does that mean we should remove chemist? No! What that means is that I have to learn how to overcome and evolve. You have 13 classes to choose from. 2 of which are hard counters to mage, the rest of which can 3-4 shot mage, which is quite possible to do, as long as you use the right technique.

Also, random killing isn't "useless." You were mad from a mage randomly singling you out and killing you, yes? Well the only reason that I can think that you would be mad for dying was if you had some sort of objective that the mage stopped you from. We're you trying to cap? We're you going to go defend? Maybe you were random killing yourself? Either way, random killing is in no way "useless." If I went around random killing, I have a very good chance of killing people on the opposing team who were trying to defend / offend, or the one archer who has been headshotting all of our offense. That's the essence of "random." If it were completely random killing, like you said, than I would obviously cross paths with people who were making an impact in the game, right? What if I were simply random killing and I just happened to kill the medic who was supporting the flag carrier? Would that still be useless? What if I ran into their flagroom and killed their pyro when coincidentally a wave of my team's offense was also going in. Useless again I guess.

I often find myself mad when I feel as if a mage (or anyone for that matter) targetted me and killed me out of random. However, 99 times out of 100, I was going to do something that would of affected the game, meaning that random killing still effects the game.

I believe I explained that mage has a purpose, and it's not just to piss people off. "Fun sponge" you say? Personally, I think people who play fashionista and use fireworks or the diamond armor glitches are fun sponges. It's not fun to play in a laggy server, or against a person who cheated diamond armor.

I see no reason to remove.

no class can consistently counter it, so it has huge targeting potential and there's nothing really you can do about it if theyre going after you, which is what makes it so frustrating to play against

@kevshadowslayer you changed my mind on the competitive aspect though, fair enough, i was wrong

I still hate it but i understand now that it has a place in ctf

    ------

    on fashionista:

the firework spam is dumb i agree, i dont actually do it much but ill stop

the diamond armor glitch isnt a glitch, i legit have a stack of diamonds in there to help me make fireworks, i dont think its an issue if im just a weak heavy

I disagree. A skilled mage can be relatively good on defence (although usually another class would be better). Its also a good archer counter, as it does not need to get as close to a bowspammer to kill the archer. If you're good with mage, you can definitely play it competitively.

Not really a problem, I am able to 1v1 a mage as medic, soldier, and heavy, and most of the time it ends in my favor. You have to get close to a mage and you are good to go, just spam your left click LOL, or right to team!

Strafing and being able to predict where and what your mage opponent will do next is key
