    2016 Team Statistics

Howdy folks, it's Hana, keeper of the CTF Match Spreadsheet!

Late in November 2015, I started collecting some hard data on teams in the scene to go along with our match history. Last January, I released what I had for our 2015 Team Stats. Luckily, this year, we got a full year of data to analyze, so let's get into it!
The images here can be found in the Stats Archive sheet of the spreadsheet, but for those of you who don't have access, this post should tell you everything you need to know. If you do plan on accessing the archives, all 2016 data can be found in the Stats Archive, but all-time records will be located in Brawl Team Stats.

    New Age CTF
So, first and foremost, you'll notice that there are a lot more teams than there are now! Essentially, this is because we analyzed all matches from 2016, even from teams who disbanded during the year. So Majestic and Mock It are both in the table, even though both are disbanded, and they actually never existed at the same time!
Speaking of disbanded teams, the Shortest Lived Team(s) Award goes to Deception, Phoenix, and Mock It! Congrats? All of these teams lasted for around two to three months - they became official one month, stayed active for the next month, and disbanded the following month. Of those three, Deception had the most matches, with a solid 5, though the others had 2 and 1, respectively. Perhaps there's a link here between activity and team lifespan? (More stats like this can be found in the Team Activity page of the spreadsheet)

Hana's Team of the Year - Best Team
Newer teams can be hard to sustain, which is why I track recent teams' lifespans, but not the titans that have been around since McPVP (Although we have lost many of them this year). Where so many young teams failed, this year, we have seen the success of Radiance Reborn, who finished the year with a 23-2 record (Losses to Genetic and Delta Force). This, of course, is substantial, especially in context of The Templars, who finished 24-1 (Loss to RR - 11/5/2016). While the stats do technically support TT's claim to the throne, they lost that head to head. All in all, it's a close one. The Templars' reign has been long, mighty, and varying levels of active, so this year, I crown RR as my personal top team in 2016. For me it's not all about the stats, but the stories of the teams and matches that go along with them. (Detailed 2016 team records can be found in the Stats Archive, and all-time records can be found in the Brawl Team Stats page of the spreadsheet)

Hana's Team of the Year - Best Attitude

But let's look past Win/Loss records, and let's look past the perceived "top". If I were active, I wouldn't want to be on either of those teams. Why? Because I'm bad. Because I think that the real winner in 2016 was a different team - The Crusaders. I won't sugarcoat this - for a team that's been around long enough to have both wins and losses (i.e. a non-zero Win/Total ratio), TC has a pretty low Win/Total. But they made up for it somewhere else - Total Games. TC finished with 53 total recorded matches (We only record officials, so this number is disregarding any unofficial, draft, PPM, or other special matches that they had). 53 matches in a year? Yeah, I guess that's about one every week, isn't it? That can't be hard to pull off, right? Well, tell that to Defiance, RR, or TT - all of whom placed second at 25 recorded matches this year.
Yep. Under half of what TC had.
    You go TC. You go.

    Referee Stats!

Now, I know some of you may have some passionate feelings about a certain player rank that would allow one to ref matches, but lets take a moment to appreciate the refs that we actually have! While all refs are important and special to us here in the team scene, one stood out among the rest - b0squet. This guy took the team scene, put it on his back, and carried. With 59 matches reffed in 2016, he reffed 38.1% of the matches this year, which is almost (but not quite) double the second most active ref, which is Winter with 30 matches/19.4% of matches in 2016.
Of course, it can be difficult to really gauge who the best ref is with all of these newer mods coming into the scene, right? So I'd like to give a shoutout to a very special mod who reffed 3/1.9% of our matches this year - Duce (Decelvice). Even though he only spent a few short months with us this year, he still managed to ref 3 fateful matches - one fewer than our new mods, Zombie and Kev (4/2.6% each).
Way to go, Duce. Way to go. (More stats like this can actually be found by checking the match history itself (scroll right) on the Brawl Teams Stats Page. The colors correspond to the refs for each match)

    Match per Day Stats
One of the more complicated statistics to track is the amount of matches that we have per day. I have some simple data for you guys now, but I plan on further analyzing the data that I have to figure out the best times for tournaments and whatnot. Keep in mind, this data is a little tricky. The "per day" part is not per 365 days from 2016, but rather, only counting days that we play matches (So generally just weekends). This is the same we way I did it last year, so we can compare them better.
In 2016, we averaged 1.89 matches per day, the median score was 2 matches/day, the mode (most common amount) was 1, and the peak was 6 matches in one day. We actually went down in every category except the last one, but don't panic! CTF isn't dying, this is just the effect of a larger sample size. Our numbers 2.86/3/4/5 were sort of unreasonably high last year, which may be an effect of the time of year (Nov-Jan) that we got to observe. (These are all the details I have now, but both 2016 and 2015 are in this post, so you can compare whatever data you want - keep in mind the difference in sample size!)

    Miscellaneous Stats
Yay, here are the fun ones!
    • Red vs. Blue: Red side won 62.6% of matches!
    • On average, the winning team scored 6.36 caps per game! (This is what you get for playing Blackout.)
    • Only one match tied - 0.65% of matches!
    That's it for 2016!
Yeah, I guess that's all for now, folks. I hope you guys enjoyed a look at the numbers, and let me know what else you want to see for next year! Cheers to 2017, and lets hope for the best.

It's certainly possible that you did! That being said, only one was recorded, so there's a couple of reasons why a match wouldn't be:
    1. The ref did not report the match results, and the team reps did not take action to fix it
    2. The match was made unofficial
      • Player imbalance or not enough players on either side
      • Invalid or no referee
      • Postponed and not properly rescheduled
    3. The match was not properly scheduled on the spreadsheet
Now while I try to keep an eye on the match schedule and make sure that things get reported, it's ultimately a team rep's job to uphold these standards. So you know, pick a rep who's up to that, or you start missing pieces of data.

Then that would probably be my fault. I wasn't really given a guide to follow when chosen as rep, the team was... inexperienced and no one was really able to help. I didn't know I was supposed to be responsible for the records.

or we only had 1 match and the rest went unofficial... (inactive members = no officials)
