CTF Regional Tournament [Concluded]

We here at the CTF Committee’s Evil Lair™ are excited to bring you the CTF Regional Tournament - an event where teams from regions spanning the globe face off in a tournament for supremacy that we assume won’t start an actual conflict! The tournament will be running for the next month or two in all likelihood, so be sure to check this thread for updates as it progresses. Anyhow, without further ado, let’s have a look at the teams for the tournament!

Team Breakdown:​

Players who sign up for the tournament will assigned to a region based on their stated place of residency. We have attempted to balance them based on a number of factors (most notably which regions have a larger share of active CTFers), and as such they may not line up perfectly with commonly held definitions of those regions, but they should provide an large enough pool of players for each team to work with. So, without any further ado, the regions are as follows:

Americas - Northeast

- The roughly northern US states that are east of the Mississippi, with the southernmost states in the grouping being Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
- The Canadian Provinces that are roughly east of the Mississippi, with Quebec being the westernmost.
- Greenland (Danish claims be damned).

Americas - Southeast

- The roughly southern US states that are east of the Mississippi, with the northernmost states in this grouping being Virginia and Kentucky, and the whole of Louisiana also being included.
- The islands roughly comprising the Caribbean, as well as any similarly situated Atlantic islands.
- Brazil

Americas - West

- The US states (excluding Hawaii) that are west of the Mississippi - the whole of Minnesota is considered part of the west for the purposes of the tournament.
- The Canadian Provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, Nunavut, and those further west.
- Mexico, as well as all of continental Central America
- All of South America, with the exception of Brazil.

Western Europe

- Comprised of Norway, Iceland, Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Andorra, Monaco, Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

Eastern Europe & The ‘Old World’

- Those European nations not previously listed, bounded roughly by Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia on the western side.
- The whole of Africa
- Any & all Asian nations that lie west of India & China (for the purposes of the tournament, Russia will be included with this region).

Oceania & East Asia

- Australia & New Zealand
- Asian nations bounded on the west by (and including) China & India
- Islands in the Indian ocean roughly bounded by the longitude of Sri Lanka’s westernmost point on the west, as well as all islands in the Pacific Ocean that are not directly adjacent to the American coast (Hawaii is considered part of Oceania, while Vancouver Island and so on is not).

If you have any further questions as to which team you would be assigned so, feel free to send me a PM. The regions & groups above may also change based on signups.

Tournament Structure:​

The tournament will be broken into two stages, with the first stage being 3-team group play and the second being a single elimination playoff bracket for the teams that advance. For the first stage of the tournament, the teams will be broken down into the following groups:

Group A:
Americas - West / Americas - Northeast / Oceania & East Asia

Group B:
Americas - Southeast / Western Europe / Eastern Europe & The ‘Old World’​

Each team will play the other two teams in the group once. As the tournament’s rules of play are meant to avoid ties, the teams that advance will be determined by their number of wins.

Playoffs:​

The top two teams from each group advance to the single-elimination playoffs. The top team from Group A will play the 2nd place team from Group B, and the top team from Group B will play the 2nd place team from Group A. The winners from those matches will play for the tournament finals, and the defeated teams will play for 3rd place.

Rules of Play:​

The tournament’s match size will be 10v10 unless we are either very short on signups or completely inundated by them.Working under that assumption, the following rules will apply:

• Class Limits of 1 pyro, 1 assassin, 1 archer, 2 medics & 3 heavies. Teams may apply up to 1 more class limit, but this must be agreed upon by both teams’ designated representatives - to be discussed more later.
  
  
• Teams will be limited to 1 ninja cap per map for each team (wherein a ‘ninja capture’ is defined as any capture where a ninja holds the flag at any point), with ninjas not being allowed to hold the flag for said team afterwards.

If a game is tied on both map wins & captures at the end of the 3rd map, it will go into overtime for up to 30 minutes. Overtime will continue until one team caps, resulting in that team’s overall victory. If the match exceeds this period of time, it may be postponed & rescheduled.

Scheduling:​

Since the CTF community is made up of players from all over the world, we understand that scheduling these matches may be a bit difficult. The groups for the first stage are designed to avoid situations where regions with wildly different timezones have a hard time scheduling, but there are likely to be difficulties regardless. As such, teams will have a 3 week timespan to schedule and complete both of their matches (and a 2 week timespan to at least complete their first). Teams will then have two weeks to complete their matches for each of the playoff rounds.

Scheduling will take place between representatives that we assign to each region based on the signups. If you have any interest in representing your region & believe you will be active enough to accomplish this, definitely let us know (but since we’ll probably have quite a few requests, don’t take it too harshly if you get turned down). We’ll be communicating with the representatives in question through Discord, so it will also be a requirement for that position. With regards to team organization, that will be entirely up to the individual representatives and the players that comprise their teams, although we recommend Discord for that function as well.

Signups for the tournament will remain open for one week. Once signups are closed, each team’s representative & player pool will be formally announced, and the group stage of the tournament will begin.
