The objective of most CTF games is no longer capturing the flag

I have noticed an awful lot something happening in CTF in the last year or so. We see CTF games go by in less than 5 minutes. This is something that REALLY bugs me. I will admit that I, myself, have been guilty of doing this in the past, but we really need to address this. My complaint is about what somebody called "kill-whoring". If I am correct, the meaning of the term is when most players on one team are more concerned with getting a lot of kills in rather than the actual objective of the game: capturing/defending the flag, leaving only a couple players to unsuccessfully defend, and/or recover the flag. I myself REALLY hate this, no matter if it is my team doing this or my opponent team. If my opponent team is doing this, it makes the game boring not that much fun, as what's the point? If my team is doing this, it makes me very frustrated. When both teams actually try defending/recovering and capturing the flag, it makes the game fun, even if my team loses. Unfortunately, the developers possible made the situation worse by increasing the amount of credits received from a kill (without increasing the amount of credits for let's say killing the carrier, recov, etc.). The developers really need to disincentivize this practice. People have been saying the CTF is dying. I don't want that to happen. I really enjoy playing it. It might help, however, to really encourage playing the actual game's objective by only awarding 1 credit for each kill, unless it is in certain range of a flag, or something along those lines. The game is not fun for me when most players on one team, whether it be the opponent team or my team) are more concerned with getting the most kills in instead of actually playing alongside the objective of CTF.

I don't think adjusting credits would do much honestly. Some people just find it more rewarding to get a bunch of kills rather than try to capture the flag as if it validates 'skill' somehow. However, I do think offense needs to be more attractive/strong so that more people will try to capture.

Side note, it's also very hard to determine when someone is deliberately playing the game to farm kills rather than playing defense. There's always going to overlap there unfortunately.

    It is and it will

    None of us do :frowning:

    It's a crazy fun game!

    Not sure about that.

Like Avalanche said, some players are definitely out to get kills, while others just play mid. A lot of players get bored waiting in the flag room for someone to come try to capture, which leads to exiting the flag room and looking for a fight.

Bigger CTF matches (that are rare now, sadly) typically have a balance of conflict throughout a map, but because of these 8v8s-16v16s it's just at a weird place.

This is casual ctf so you should probably expect people to do strange things.

This would counter the recently added 12 credits per kill when near the flag carrier. This was added to convince others to support their flag carriers which would classify as playing the objective.
This is why competitive CTF is more appealing to a lot of players. It focuses more on playing the objective rather than running around killing people.

casual is literally 2 people on offense vs 40 people in the flagroom, and it has been like this ever since quarantine started

From my viewpoint, it is a matter of the way people view CTF and other team PvP games. I predominately play defense with an amount of running around killing people. Really my personal play revolves around team support. Therefore, that play style can be viewed as revolving around kills despite my opposition.
Although, I wouldn't say focusing on kills in a PvP game is bad. After all, CTF is also team PvP (despite casual's severe distortion). "Kill-whoring" is certainly annoying, although not very common to warrant major changes. I don't think disincentivizing kills in a game with PvP is a good thing. After all, most CTF matches nowadays are usually a few regulars dominating a game with selective killing and messing around. What is a problem is blatant targeting - which is commonly addressed. When it comes to the topic of CTF's demise, this is not a significant problem in my opinion.
With that said, I do agree that the objective of CTF is no longer capturing the flag. Brawl CTF is commonly a 15-30 player server with just about only regulars doing whatever they want. If you think that is killing the server then you would be correct.

The increased credits for kills is a bug by the way, it should be fixed now.

The problem right now is offence is absolutely awful on casual. The game is almost exclusively balanced around competitive, where classes like Pyro, Ninja and Assassin are usually limited because of how powerful they are. Furthermore, players on defence are forced to work together (they're almost always in the same place, in the flagroom), whereas players on offence are more spread out and will only work together if they actively try and do it. This almost never happens on casual.

I've mained offence for 9 years now, and I no longer bother playing CTF when there's too many players online. Anything above 30 players and I'll either mess around and go for kills, or go do something else.

It's long overdue that we start focusing on casual rather than competitive. Competitive is going to die if it doesn't get new players from casual, so focusing on casual is far better for both gamemodes.
