Okay, so we all love to play CTF. But playing as a team is HARD. So what exactly should you do? Here's a concise list of what roles you can play for a team in CTF and the classes you can use to play them.

    Defense:
Pretty straightforward: you will be working to keep the flag in the flag room. This means killing flag carriers and potential flag carriers.
    Active Defense:
You're going to want to be in and around the flag room, killing most enemies who come near it. Your goal is to weaken people before they get to the flag. The effects of this are huge on very tanky classes like chemist, soldier, and heavy.
    Recommended classes:
    -Ninja
    -Heavy
    -Mage
    -Pyro
    Standing Defense:
The goal of this group is to kill any enemies inside the flag room as fast as possible without letting them back out. Preferably you don't let them get the flag, but as long as they're dead, it doesn't matter. If you're guarding the flag, focus is key. Watch for ninjas that appear next to the flag at all times, but also watch the exits. Soldiers can get away and FAST. Chemists can run in and out, and once they're out, they're gone.
    Recommended classes:
    -Dwarf
    -Pyro
    -Assassin
    -Heavy
    -Chemist
    -Medic (use webs to block)
    Defensive Support:
Heal and buff the defense. It makes them faster and stronger. Also, during a stalemate, guard the flag carrier and heal him. When doing this, watch for incoming ninjas. It's especially helpful if you block constantly; you take less damage and avoid assassins.
    Recommended classes:
    -Chemist
    -Medic
    -Mage
    Recovery:

    Active recovery:
The most common type of recovery. Go after the flag carrier before he caps. Try to get in front of him, knock him to the sides, and anticipate where he's going. Forward launching sponges are quite often used by flag carriers, so try to get near one of those.
    Recommended classes:
    -Assassin
    -Chemist
    -Ninja
-Mage (for it's fire and freeze spells)
    -Archer (headshots)
    Passive recovery:
Comes into play during a stalemate. Try to kill the flag carrier fast before the medics flanking them (and there will be medics) notice. Especially hard with ultra-mobile classes like soldier.
    Recommended classes:
    -Ninja
    -Assassin
    -Pyro
-Elf (but only from a distance and with pure element)
    -Heavy
-Archer (make sure you have a teammate ready to recover once headshotted)

    Offense:

    Stealing and capturing the flag.
    Stealing:
The hardest role to play. Going for the flag and taking it. Tank classes with big health pools are ideal, but fast moving classes can also work. Essentially, get by the defense win 1 of 3 ways: Moving them out of the way, running past them, or tanking through them. Distractions also work well.
    Recommended classes:
-Soldier (high mobility, slightly tanky, medium health pool )
-Chemist (high health pool, somewhat high mobility, regenerating health)
-Medic (high health pool, can restrict other's mobility, pyro-invunerable, regenerating health, restricts defensive mobility)
-Heavy (medium health pool, extremely tanky)
-Ninja (invisible, high mobility, regenerating health)
-Mage (Regenerating health, restricts defensive mobility)
-Elf (High health pool, high mobility, restricts defensive mobility)

More to come for offense as well as tricks and tips for every role and class!

    @Lord_Roke ^

The guide looks fine and everything but how could you forget the important role of trolling?

It's better to just report the post and say that it needs to be moved, it gets it done faster than tagging a mod.

I already did so, it should be moved eventually

Great guide! I would suggest a sections for controlling middle and the flanking sides.

These are the roles of CTF for people who play the objective.

That being said, midfielding is a very real part of the game. While we'd all like everyone to play objective, you can't really ignore the fact that some classes are very strong at mid, and tend to flock there. Objectively, think of midfield as the front-line defense. It's like the skin, then the flag-room defense is like the antibodies for defending against disease.
    Midfield:
    Core Classes:
These classes work well in mid, and it's considered either their most common or most effective position.

    • Archer
    • Mage
    • Elf
    Other Classes:
These classes are used, but could be better elsewhere.

    • Pyro
    • Assassin
    • Heavy
Midfielding is a role in the game like any other. If you ignore that, you're going to get killed. It is by far the easiest position to get kills in, but when you think about it, the only thing that really separated midfield from defense is location. Defense's range only extends to things that come near the flag or base, and they tend to get fewer kills out of it because a good amount of the offense gets killed further up the battlefield, usually at what one might call mid. Because it's not directly touching the flag, only works well in big games, and tends to be comprised of noobs and stat-obsessed players, there's a lot of stigma surrounding midfielding, but think of it as like a giant meat shield that your defense would be screwed without in a normal game.

The classes in my opinion should fill a different role

Ninja: should be picking off enemy's behind there lines not standing by flag

Assassin: same as ninja (except doesn't have to be behind enemy lines)

Chemist: Should buff his teammates more then himself seeming like more of a support

Necro: should be a supporting offense as the minions annoy the enemy team and can be used to attack people from a safe distance or simply being a constant annoyance

    Engineer: Defense/Support
(Do I really need to explain?)
