I know this sort of thing has been brought up before but since Minecraft 1.9 is scheduled to be released this Thursday I figured I'd make a thread about it. After all Brawl will eventually update to 1.9 once its released.

Anyway, I've been watching some videos with the new PvP mechanics and I'm not sure if I like them or not. I don't really want to draw any preemptive conclusions as to how they would affect CTF gameplay but from what I've seen it does seem like the new PvP is slower paced and more strategic than current PvP. As far as CTF is concerned, I'm not sure if that is good or bad for gameplay, but I do think the new combat mechanics (i.e. shields) could add some interesting dynamics.

How do you think the combat update will affect CTF? Just in general, what are your thoughts?

I just know that PvP and most of the plugins could be very messy at release of the update.

It took us 8 months to update from 1.7 to 1.8. And that didn't include large changes to combat besides auto-sprint. The time it takes for plugins to update and for brawl to edit gameplay to fit 1.9; we're looking at months upon months before we make the switch.

True. But the 1.9 update is still worth discussing because it probably will change CTF gameplay quite a bit.

I really doubt Minecraft will go big with these updates, and I honestly think Bukkit / Spigot will find a way to configure the intervals between hits. Considering if they thought this update was going to piss people off, they would be loosing a bunch of players and money.

Pretty sure mojang added a way to easily switch off weapon cooldowns using a bit of code. The update has to be rolled out on brawl first anyway.

It's not even a bit of code; it's an NBT tag doable with command blocks. Disabling the offhand slot is very easy, just add permanent glass panes and have the offhand switch key, f, become another action entirely or do nothing. This is quite possible, as the drop item key, q, doesn't drop the item in CTF, instead being the wait up signal.

Yeah, the 1.9 update looks very interesting, and the addition of shields could be a nice archer nerf. Block, but do not reflect, arrows when facing the direction of the archer, perhaps the message "your headshot was blocked!" Or something like that.

    Omg your first non-controversial post @Admiral_Trump !

I don't necessarily like the pvp of 1.9 from what Ive seen. I'm certain there is a way to keep the pvp the same as it is now, but the shields and extra off-hand things will definitely be an interesting change for ctf, perhaps getting some better reworks and eventually new classes. Not to mention potion-tipped arrows.

I think 1.9 could greatly benefit CTF if utilized correctly. With the new attack speed we can have much more diverse classes. Instead of "low damage/high damage, low armor/high armor" classes, we can add one more variable to that which is attack speed. Giving a more clear definition of roles, while ensuring uniqueness for every class.

Of course since damage is now slower, armor will have to receive a nerf, otherwise capturing will be super easy (easier than it already is.)

However, if CTF is adapted poorly to 1.9 then it'll be as if no update happened (or maybe worse) in which case we'd waste a perfect opportunity to make steps to fix this game.

So, like ninja swings the fastest and has no amor, and heavy swings the slowest and has the highest armor?

the changes aren't bad in any way. they add some form of strategy and skill to pvp (deciding whether to go for knockback or maximum damage, blocking damage becoming far more important) instead of the ping-dependent spamclick-fest that it is now.

mojang is making sure your fingers dont fall off by the time you're 40 and you're complaining?

Or Heavy would have high armor, high swing speed, and low damage. The faster the swing speed the easier the class is to play. So we can easily design classes to be easier or harder to play depending on their swing speed. Since Heavy is a free class, I think it would be appropriate to have a fast swing speed.

Classes will need to be changed in order to fit the new 1.9 gameplay.

I could seriously get down with any new update, the only real issue I see every time an update is released is how the hit detection gets worse every year! New content is really what keeps a game alive for so long, however, when that new content changes an already appreciated factor, it's some times the original that is superior.
