    Disclaimer:

Seeing as the "what do you want?" forums survey was a complete success,
and actually yielded some pretty interesting results I wanted to make a post on it (originally I wanted to make a video but my mic wasn't cooperating, it was going to be ridiculously long, and all that other stuff). Many of you already know at least some of the results because I let people look at them (silly me) so you may know a lot of the results posted here already. That said, this thread is meant for two things: 1) clearly presenting the results to everyone 2) my impressions/comments on the feedback and 3) your impressions/comments on the feedback. Nothing else.

    Value of the survey*:

(font used as a coutesy of @wintergreen3 so she doesn't have to read Times New Roman)

This survey is of limited value. This is for several reasons. First, it was conducted on the forums so it only gauges the opinions of the very small chunk of Brawlers or CTF'ers out there who bother to register an account on the forums and actually use it for something other than posting a moderator application. Second, there was no filter for troll responses (@BAWSS5) so if any response isn't entirely serious it messes with the results. Third, this was a voluntary response survey so the results are likely skewed in the direction of people who cared enough to answer all (or most) of the questions rather than providing a particularly accurate impression of the various views of the forums community (as any statistician would tell you). And finally, a few of the response choices weren't that serious and have nothing to do with the goal of the survey (to provide more meaningful data for what changes forums community members want) :stuck_out_tongue: for example "I feel naked when I play Ninja" doesn't tell anyone anything about what changes you want to see with Ninja. Maybe it's a vote for no change at all if you like feeling naked? But what if you don't? It's useless data.

That's my fault by the way. I didn't expect to get 71 responses** (64 on most questions) so I didn't make this survey as serious as it should have been.

However, does that mean this survey is worthless? No. There were 71 respondents to Question 1, several dozen to the three text response questions, and 64 to all the remaining questions except the last two. That's a lot of a responses for a forums community where (if I had to guess) around 100 people are active or semi active on it. A lot of these responses also tended to say the same thing. For instance, a ton of people said something along the lines of "buff Ninja sharpness" in one of the written response questions and that opinion was corroborated by a result that showed the very large majority of respondents favor either a tweak or two for Ninja (buffing the sword sharpness to sharpness V was given as an example here). That data does have some value because it reflects an opinion held by the significant majority of the people who responded to the survey or took out the time to leave a comment or two. Furthermore, it is valuable because, as I ranted about in a much older thread, there is no way to ascertain the size of the CTF community (let alone properly survey them) because CTF is a server not a country (or a school body). Anyone can pop in for a few minutes, leave, and never come back. There is no constant size at any given time so how do you properly survey the opinions of that fluctuating body? You can't. Surveying the opinions and thoughts of a few dozen people on the forums, who are basically the only people who have demonstrated they give enough of a damn about the gamemode to go and post stuff on the forums about it (rants, reworks, team stuff, maps, etc.), is the only reasonably good way to get an idea of what the playerbase wants. CTF forumers tend to be more experienced and dedicated and anyway, who else is talking about reworks and so on outside of this little forums section? Finally, 47 people left written responses on what they wanted changed and why (specifically classes) and that kind of feedback is, for the most part, invaluable since it gives the full scope of someone's opinion, thoughts, etc. etc.

**the actual number of respondents on the first question is 70 since I double voted on the first question when I was testing out the survey (this was my first time using Google Forms). I answered class reworks twice. The data below has been adjusted accordingly.

    Priorities:

Other than Brawl keeping CTF up and running and the posting of more selfies to the IRL gallery, CTF forumers really want to see class changes.

Exactly half of the 70 respondents to the first question (35/70) put 'Class reworks' at the top of their priorities list. Combined with the 27.1% who wanted 'Tweaks' 77.1% (or 54/70) of respondents wanted class changes of some kind.

On the other hand, only 4/70 respondents (5.7%) considered the issues with the teams system their priority, whereas 5/70 said maps. The 9/70 respondents or 12.9%, were ambivalent.

    Reworks:

Over half of the 47 forumers (no idea why the response rate to this question was this low) want Necro to be reworked over all other classes. 24/47, or 51.1% want a Necro rework before anything else. Interestingly, 4/47 (8.4%) of respondents picked Medic to be reworked first, while an equal number wanted the same for Archer, and 5/47 respondents wanted an Assassin rework before any other class. 2/47 - 5% or less of respondents wanted either Ninja, Engineer, Soldier, Mage, Dwarf, Pyro, or Chemist for the same.

No one chose Heavy or Soldier as their no.1 rework priority.

    Verbal Responses:

This was my favorite part of the survey because 1) some of the responses were funny, 2) some of the responses were even funnier, and 3) because some respondents took the time to write well thought out and valuable feedback on x, y, and z.

Some of this feedback was fantastic but some of the responses like "it's ****", "I wanna pony" (@BAWSS5), "It is too weak", "it's as useless as I am in math", "bc it takes alot of dmg and does alot of dmg" and other stuff are not helpful. That's partially my fault because I didn't ask what class respondents had selected in the prior question. However, this question received 47 responses so make of it what you will.

    Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 3.58.14 PM.png

The 25 responses to this question were a little less troll-y and fairly good overall. Restoration of sharpness V for Ninja was requested in 6 of the responses and there was one request for Miley Cyrus because her "twerks would benefit this server". That was you too wasn't it @BAWSS5?

    Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 4.02.01 PM.png

There were 19 responses to this question and at least three of them were something along the lines of "n/a" and two involved a lenny face. Still, there was some good feedback to this question as well so take that for what it's worth.

    Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 4.04.34 PM.png

One response was not included in the screenshot, mainly because I don't feel like screen-shotting a single line of text, and it said "More maps and maybe 1 server with old maps?" Most of the other responses were trolls, contained a lenny face, and not worth reading for any serious feedback (although ONE response was an entire song).

    Classes:

As mentioned earlier there were 64 responses to each question on the opinion of all 13 classes. To my knowledge, there were no repeats. The following are the results for Heavy, Medic, and Pyro:

    Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 4.06.53 PM.png

2/64 respondents think Heavy needs a rework. 25/64 thinks it needs no changes, including fixing critical hits, and the remaining 37 do. Nevertheless, these results are somewhat misleading. The 57.8% result for tweaks regarding Heavy is most likely due to a desire to get its critical hits fixed (i.e., not taking 6 hearts of damage from an un-buffed Heavy in one hit) and reducing the power of buffed Heavy, rather than out of the popularity of messing with the armor, weaponry, or health-pool of the class. How do I know this? Because the most common complaints about Heavy on the forums (and in the written portion of this survey) has been one of two things: broken crits or buffed Heavy, both of which make the class extremely strong. Plus, the near total lack of support for a Heavy rework let alone making a rework a priority also indicates a greater level of satisfaction with the class' base design among respondents (which crits and strength/speed buffs from Chemist are not a part of).

9/64 of respondents want a Medic rework, which is somewhat surprising although its significance is negligible. Less surprising is the 33 respondents who want tweaks of some kind to Medic, which could encompass all manners of changes ranging from restoring sharpness I on the sword to changing up the webs (i.e. coding them so that allies don't get stuck in them like enemies do, removing the ability to break webs instantly) or lowering Medic's health pool (i.e. by eliminating it's natural regeneration or reducing the number of steaks or both). The remaining 24/64 want no changes at all.

An equal number of respondents as Heavy want to see some changes with Pyro. Noting the example given next to the second question, a lot of respondents want to see the return of one click frenzy mode. It's an assumption at best but it's one worth mentioning as the idea of bringing back one click frenzy has been popular on the forums since the frenzy mode trigger was changed to a double click several months ago.

    Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 4.24.48 PM.png

Forumers are split over what to do with Assassin. Less than half of the total, 26/64 respondents, want to see it get a rework. A close second, 22/64 respondents want to see no changes at all, another 9 want to see it tweaked (although what kind of tweaks is unclear), 4 want to see it removed (including me), and 3 more have a lot of problems with the class but apparently aren't sure what to do about it.

The opinion on Necro is far more uniform. A whopping 9 in 10 respondents, or 57/64 of the total, not only want a rework but are wondering where on earth it is. Including me. So to reiterate the message... WHERE IS THE REWORK BRO??? 4 pinheads think it doesn't need any changes (seriously, WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?) and the remaining 3 respondents want to see some tweaks but not a rework to the class.

For the most part, forumers do not want to see any changes to Soldier. 40/64 respondents voted for the third option, "it's fine" and for those who do want to see some additions opinion is divided as to whether or not Soldier should receive a rework or a few tweaks.

The opposite is the case with Mage. 52/64 respondents, or 81.2% of the total want to see some kind of change to the class, with 51.6% breaking in favor of various tweaks and other minor changes, and the remaining 29.7% favoring a rework. Of those favoring a rework 11 think Mage is "OP and needs a rework" whereas 8 think it's not OP but still warrants a rework. Whether a full on rework or incremental changes would be preferred by the large majority of the forums community is unclear, but it is very clear that the large majority (over 8/10, nearly as many who want a fix to Necro) of respondents want some kind of change to Mage.

    Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 4.39.38 PM.png

39/64 respondents, or 60.9% (almost 2/3rds of the total), want Ninja to be tweaked. 2/64 want a rework and the remaining 21/64 either think the class is fine as it is or "feel naked" when playing it (this option was selected 10 times). Clearly, there is little desire for a Ninja rework but a lot for tweaks (especially with regards to ghost capping or sharpness V). These results are further compounded by the multiple requests for tweaks in the written response section.

Opinion on what to do with Engineer is heavily split among the four options. 12/64 respondents, the smallest total for any of the four, want the class to be removed. An equal number want an Engineer rework and (even more) tweaks. Only 14/64 respondents, a narrowly larger number than those calling for a removal, think it needs no changes. On the other hand, there is some uniformity in that 59.4% of respondents or 38/64 want to see changes with Engineer.

Moreover, 35/64 respondents, 55.6% of the total want a Dwarf rework with the large majority of them saying that it is an OP class. 14 voted for tweaking the class and none voted for no changes (in part because that wasn't an option! :stuck_out_tongue:). An equal number also voted for my Dwarf poem/joke "Roses are red, Dwarf is OP, hi I'm Rick Harrison and this is my pawnshop" which I am extremely proud of because it's a really bad joke.

To my surprise and damn near astonishment, the forums community is extremely divided as to what to do about Archer. Exactly a quarter of respondents seem to have no preferred course of action (no idea if this is true or not) but are just really, REALLY angry about headshots. A whopping, and mind blowing (to me) 17/64 respondents or 26.6% of the total, do not want to see any changes whatsoever, which is significantly larger than the 13 respondents who want a rework. 18 respondents favor a tweak or two to Archer, most likely removing Punch I from the bow (that was the example tweak provided in the answer choice and eliminating the knockback enchantment has been frequently requested on the forums before). In total only 48.1% of respondents favor changing Archer. That said, the large number of responses to the "Fu(&!#*^&! HEADSHOTS" option skewed the data quite a bit (some respondents could have chosen this option as a joke and so on) so I have reposed the question in a poll on this thread as to what members of the forums community want done with the class. Please answer it.

    SURVEY.png

Neither of the final two class results listed above are very interesting so I won't go in depth into either one of them.

54.7% of respondents want some minor changes to Chemist and a total of 65.6%, about two thirds of the total, want something done.

Elf's result is also somewhat predictable. The huge majority of respondents, 52/64 (81.2%) in this case, want changes made to the class. A quarter want a rework and the rest want a series of tweaks although what those tweaks are isn't entirely clear although there has been a lot of support voiced for buffing the water element (which has been repeatedly described as "virtually useless").

    In other news...

Almost two thirds of the forums community does not like Leafy. That makes me happy. #NOCHIN take that emoface!

Also, over 60% of forumers would rate "dat ass" an 8/8. The other 39% were too self conscious to respond.

Ladies and gentlemen that's it for the stats today. Guys if you love StatAlert feel free to slap a like on it. Thanks for reading.

"Second, there was no filter for troll responses (@BAWSS5) so if any response isn't entirely serious it messes with the results." (Too lazy to quote you)

Hey man, the only ones I gave troll responses to were the ones you had troll answers for.
    ... and the short answer.

I am particularly proud of 'maps' tho.

First and foremost, I was part of the 60.7%.

Secondly, I've been watching the results throughout with quite a few expectations about how things would go. Turns out that I was wrong on quite a number of counts and the community really did surprise me on those.

From the first question, I wasn't really expecting anything else. Whilst the other options are clearly important in making a successful gamemode, the classes really are central to everything. If the classes don't work or aren't good, then CTF as a whole wouldn't be much fun. It's also not a surprise given the limited amounts of change we've had recently. It's not really a surprise to see that some of the classes have become rather stale to some. Moreover, that issue of balance can become quite a nuisance if nothing is done. People tend to lose patience if nothing is done about it for an extended period of time after all. It's also not really all that surprising to see tweaks up there in popularity as well. A lot of the respondents to the questionnaire would have been regular players (since they're the ones who probably care enough to answer it in the first place). It's no surprise that a lot of those regular players who had played for a long time wouldn't want to see drastic change to the gamemode. If it were to be changed that much, it wouldn't really be the same ctf they loved back in the day. That's quite important for any changes that are made in the future too. Any changes made need to address the problems the classes do have at the moment without changing the game so much that it feels like a completely different gamemode. I was actually talking a bit about this with @PleaseUninstall and I think it would be quite interesting to see those opinions too.

Moving onto which needed reworking the most, necro being chosen as top wasn't really a surprise either. To say the class has been broken now for over a year is kinda ridiculous, and although I'm sure the staff already have a rework in mind, that should have been done months ago along with the chemist and pyro updates. It's pretty much unusable seriously in it's current state and so to say people want it reworked isn't really that surprising. Reworking it would also give it the opportunity to become useful in matches, and of course be removed off that all important match ban list. It would be quite nice in the future to have that opportunity. What did however surprise me was how few people actually put archer or assassin down as classes to be reworked first. Given how much hate archer in particular receives I'd have expected many more than only 4 responses in favour of that. It also interests me given the brawl staff initiatives to remove instakills from CTF, and yet in relative terms they're much lower down the list compared to other classes.

Moving onto verbal responses (which I also thoroughly enjoyed reading), it was really not that surprising to see people wanting to rebuff ninja sharpness (we all know it hits like a wet paper towel) and a couple of archer tweaks. Not all classes seem to be unbalanced to the point of being broken and can be fun to play, and so small tweaks like these wouldn't take long and have a big impact on the game. As for reworking classes, mostly the reasons tended to fall under balance being too overpowered or underpowered. Also yes, we need Miley Cyrus in ctf.

As for team system change requests, whilst some weren't very helpful (surely if you want to change the system there has to be something you wanted correcting?) but for those that did answer, what seemed to come up interesting would be the #refrank or more ref requests. Hopefully this is going to be addressed sometime in the near future. I would say that the refs we have are only human too, and that whilst they did sign up for the job they can't always be there to help us out. We do have to be somewhat reasonable with them. With that said, there aren't enough online when there need to be, and hopefully with some new successful mod applications in the near future we'll be able to sort that out. Not sure a ref rank is really a possibility anymore but hopefully those new mods and refs will make sure we don't need the rank anyway. also *cough @Dankmastr_Memesn 4 mod

Interestingly enough it wasn't gameplay that featured the most out of the problems with maps, it was more the fact that they were getting stale. A lot of the respondents seemed to be bored of the maps in rotation, and wanted the bad ones (*cough ship battle) removed. I was honestly expecting it to be more gameplay related and that the new maps entering rotation compromised that for aesthetics, which is why this took me by surprise. I guess the reasoning behind it must be the new maps don't tend to stay around very long because of the poor gameplay, leaving the old maps in. The longer they're in rotation the staler they become. Best way to fix that would be to have new maps in rotation (new map wave soon, hooray!) that don't compromise gameplay for aesthetics. I know the map makers spend a lot of time and effort in making the maps for us, and so hopefully they'll be able to do a really good job this time! Also I really enjoyed the song.

The class reworks were quite an interesting set of results too. Heavy medic and pyro weren't really that surprising. Tweaks here and there would fix the broken crits, the 2 click frenzy and the fact medic can't kill anything right now. They don't need major reworks because they're pretty fair (and heavy is pretty much the definition of balance for everyone anyway). To add into that, necro wasn't really surprising either. Given how useless it is right now, it's really to be expected how many people want to see it reworked. Thanks to the troll respondents who actually put "It's fine" though, I'm sure you annoyed @Dankmastr_Memesn which is never a bad thing *cough

Soldier was also deemed to be fine by the majority, which also seems fairly reasonable. It's recently had a "nerf" and it wasn't bad before anyway so it really doesn't require any nerf (or if it does, it's certainly not on the list of priorities). It'd be interesting to see what people thought of an even longer charge time for that wall climb ability, given the "nerf" didn't really affect the class all too much.

I've talked about ninja already, and so looking at the responses earlier it really isn't any surprise that a lot of people wanted ninja to have a tweak here and there (SHARPNESS BUFF). It's not life threateningly important given how badly other classes need a rework, but it certainly should be done soon enough (especially since it wouldn't take very long at all to fix).

Engineer was an interesting one, yet not unexpected. Given how many nerfs it has received, there are a lot of people who find it annoying, but fair in regular gameplay. Others still want it to burn in the fiery pits of hell (understandable) so the divided response was likely to happen. Honestly, in this situation it might be best just to think about reworking it anyway, the reason being it's still banned in team matches, and changing it up could potentially make it playable in team matches in the future. I'd personally like to see it a potential mechanic for matches, and you know, less annoying.

Chemist and elf weren't really too surprising. Both needed tweaks rather than full reworks, which I'm inclined to believe. Both have a high skill cap but can be really useful if played right. Something potentially to buff elf damage, and extending the fire resistance on chemist pots have been said before, and it shows in the survey that tends to be the overall opinion as well. Probably not the highest priority thing on the list, but like ninja, need to be done.

Dwarfs an interesting one as well. Given it's ridiculous power in the flagroom, but limited use elsewhere, there's a lot of people who would consider it to not be OP. However, whether it was considered too powerful or not, there are a hell of a lot of people who want to see it reworked. As with necro and engineer, I'd like to see it reworked in the near future too, so it could potentially become something in team matches. Having these three classes both being not overpowered, but equally usable in that gameplay situation would potentially breathe some life back into the team system, open up the potential for new players to be recruited (there aren't that many necro/engi/dwarf mains around!) and the reworks in general would change up the gameplay. Definitely think it should be a priority to get this fixed and usable!

Mage wasn't totally unexpected. I think a lot of people don't believe mage is powerful enough to break the game. With that said, the heal spell effectively giving it infinite health combined with the damage spell knockback can be a nuisance. Nothing too drastic needs to really be done (or should be done, drastic changes could have an effect on regular players as I said earlier). Small changes like less knockback or a slower regeneration would be absolutely fine in this case. Quite a sizeable chunk of people thought it was absolutely fine anyway, so as far as a priority, I don't think it's that important (at least not when compared to necro!)

The biggest surprise was definitely the assassin and archer results. Given how much hate both classes receive I was expecting there to be a hell of a lot of responses about total reworks. Assassin was really divided. A good chunk of the responses all thought it was fine. I get the logic behind it, namely that it can be 1 shot whilst it's trying to 1 shot, but I'm surprised it was that many. Only about 6% more wanted a total rework, which again is justifiable given how ping dependent it is. The tweak response shouldn't be underestimated either given a good 15% of responses wanted that as well. I think the best way to fix assassin in it's current form would be changing the ping dependent mechanic, but not reworking the class in a way that would make it totally different as to how it is now. It seems that people like the idea of assassin, but just not the ping dependency. Given instakills are going to be removed anyway, I think a rework is pretty inevitable. Let's hope that when it is done, it doesn't change the core role, or the mechanics too much.

As for archer, a good 26% of the community don't even want to change how it is (which given the hate I get for using it, it's a minor miracle). I'm going to ignore the joke response here just because whilst it's pretty damn obvious they hate headshots, I'm not sure whether they think they're fair or not, just that they don't like them! Of those that did want change, over 28% wanted minor tweaks whilst only 20% wanted a full blown rework. Given the situation, I'd say that archer was overpowered, but not to the point of being ridiculous. I'd say that the best course of action would be to make tweaks to both the power of headshots and the bows punch, whilst keeping the core mechanics of the class the same. That way the class becomes balanced, but doesn't lose the feel of the old class, which quite a number seem to think is fine right now anyway. I've already suggested some ideas to @Dankmastr_Memesn on a potential archer rework, which he posted on a thread a while back. I still think it would be the best way to go with the class, and I'd urge you to have a look at it and see what you think of it. Whatever's done, I think it should be rather minor, but in a way to make the class less powerful than it is right now.

So, to summarise all that, I think the next update should focus on fixing necro and dwarf (as well as minor bugs like broken crits). Map makers need to focus on making maps which are good for gameplay as well as looking pretty (and on a side note I know it's not much but really, thank you for the hard work you guys put in, despite me complaining all the time I really do appreciate you guys building all these maps I get to play on, I couldn't hope to build what you do in a lifetime). We need more refs, and hopefully to rework things in a way which fixes balance without changing things up so much the gamemode becomes unrecognisable.

I know the survey wasn't perfect, but thanks for running it anyway @Dankmastr_Memesn. It was really interesting to see what some of the community thought, and it defied my expectations in quite a number of ways. Let's hope the staff notice and get to working on the problems you've managed to raise
