I've been watching so many forum posts recently. I'm not a good debater, so I don't post that often. In a few recent threads, people have been suggesting that CTF should be completely reworked. IMO, I think that a complete CTF rework would be a great way to rebalance classes, although it would take a lot of time and effort to do this. I mean look at War. They've been waiting for version 2 for a long time. I'm curious about the community's opinions.

The fact is that people argue about the changes they have been waiting for. And plus if the completely re-designed CTF turns out bad, many people could be expected to leave CTF ;-; At this point idk what's better. Risking the whole game-mode or just update it with all the non-sense continuing

I find it hilarious how this gamemode went to crap right quick. I still hold the record for being on 3 ctf teams at one time :grinning:

Oh yes, I shiver to think of how many people would leave an ultra popular game-mode like CTF if we got a bad update!

What are we at these days? About 100, 110 players total? My oh my, CTF would have so much to lose!

Even if CTF were to get a complete rework it would take over a year to actually implement, not even including the time it would take to fix all the major bugs. Would take less time if they just stick with what they have and just build on it with changes here and there, like pyro frenzy.

    Just gotta' be patient, it's a part of coding. ^^;

Or perhaps someone has already done it, yet didn't get caught.

Anyways I don't think ctf needs to be completely reworked. What would even change and where would it start?

The poll results indicate a nearly equal opinion on both sides of the proposal. Judging from what I've seen thus far, there has been an undeniable nerfing of the whole game, and the frustration of many players, especially those who mained that certain class, is becoming increasingly more evident. Though many of us dislike change and are reluctant to move towards it, a reworking of the entire game could deter people from constantly lamenting to get their class changed whilst providing an engaging experience to everyone (utopian thinking, perhaps). Therefore, I think it would be worth a try to get CTF back to what it was like in 2012 and rework the classes from there.

    tl;dr, last paragraph

You got a point there, actually. There were many screw ups in the development of the game which could have been avoided by class reworks instead of bandaid classes, however CTF was pretty broken to begin with (I haven't played CTF as far back as 2012, but if I'm correct in assuming that the free classes were released first, all of those classes but heavy [the most basic and vanilla one] were in need of a rework).

The idea of starting CTF over again does frighten most of the community (@Admiral_Munson), I would say. Many people may indeed leave forever (@Ducksfan101), instead of a maximum of three months. But if you think about it in Brawl terms, they're probably losing money in their purchase of CTF anyway; an entirely new gamemode, with as few horrible failures as possible, could potentially attract a bunch more new players to the game, and the game's optimally non-brokenness wouldn't scare off half of the noobs who join it. It would probably be the final nail in the coffin for the community's breakup, but I believe most or all of those who are open-minded to major changes in CTF (like me) would stay and enjoy the new game.

I don't believe it should be a worrying matter for many of the players who would consider staying for the new CTF, in fact, because the basics of the gamemode would be generally the same: you need a tanky class, a healing class, a fairly mobile class, and a last-resort flag recovery class which can strike from a range (but without instakill). On top of that, a mobile high-damage-low-armor class like ninja isn't such a bad idea when the ranged last-resort can't possibly get the kill. A staple part of defense (current or even further-nerfed pyro, just for example; maybe it shouldn't use fire, though) would be iffy grounds, but if offensively capable classes have rather strong armor like soldier, a soft counter to those would be nice.

After that stuff, creativity and skill curves are essential to newer classes; elf is a great example in that its maximum reward for a lot of training does not break the game, however such a class should not have as steep of a skill curve. Also, premium classes should not be much more powerful than free classes, making the game not pay-to win; you should be able to play a match with just the free classes and not have imbalances due to class abilities alone, nor should any one or few classes be master-able to the point where you can carry the team (i.e. old soldier or old pyro).

As you see, the general concepts of the game probably would not change all that much because a game involving PvP-based flag capturing requires some of the broader principles of the current game; current CTFers' skill sets would most likely be applicable to the new CTF in one way or another.

So in short, even if CTF has an entire rework through and through, the biggest reason for any player loss would be players from the current community being saltier than sodium chloride in its purest form about changes happening to their beloved gamemode. In Brawl's perspective, the worst thing that could happen is a temporary loss of players as the community rebuilds itself, but no matter what they're likely to make a profit from it.

I believe CTF is fine as long as they continue to make small tweaks on the maps and kits.
Plus I don't need a 2.0.. I don't want brawl to mess up the way the game already is.
Great thoughts though @Shawn_ they might come into mind in he future.

Reworking CTF completely could help with some imbalances in the game. But it is way too risky. Redoing a whole gamemode, all of the classes, game mechanics etc would take an enormous amount of time to design and balance, possibly changing maps/designing new ones for the new game style, plus occupy a coder for months. We would also risk it being a failure and spending even more time on rebalancing, which could mean we have an unstable CTF for half a year to a year or more (and making it a seperate server would split the community if people would play the new CTF at all).

It's a pessimistic view on things, but the current CTF is a stable gamemode. I'd rather not risk changing the status quo on it because it could create more problems than we have now. War is far more unstable than CTF is, its code is really old and hasn't been redone in the past few years at all, making it difficult to run and change things, that's why it is getting a major overhaul. For CTF, it would be a better solution to keep tackling problems individually as it's been done before (it won't be balanced 100% anyway).

No way would Brawl risk that much time and money for a gamemode that is mostly stable.
