Read my post, notice that I discussed chat, and how to handle chat, and then rethink your statement.

That is not solving the problem. That is avoiding the problem.

This thread exists because people spending a lot of time spamming chat with their own sadness etc. is a problem and is not going to be dealt with by turning off chat and hoping the person goes away. By your logic, we should also tolerate spammers, flamers, and people sending 18+ content because we can just "turn off chat" -- which is obviously the wrong way to go about it.

"Makes a thread about something I don't like in chat and it should be censored because it's annoying".

Welcome to real life, where their people don't get what they want or what they like. If it's a genuine issue such as an official rule being broken, such as spamming, flamers, and 18+ content, then there is a reason to intervene in the chat. CTF chat gets flamed with **** all the time, by your logic and the logic of this thread, I could make the same post about "anime" or "politics" tomorrow.

agreed, but can definitely be worded better and more clearly. i don’t play ctf anymore but i think i have enough experience to talk —

i have delt w/ suicidal individuals first hand and have talked to numerous people abt. their issues. i understand how terrible it can be. however, i do agree that people should not flood places like game chat w/ such talk; it is not fit. it even gets to be annoying on snapchat when posted on their stories w/ no context. especially when you ask and are refused an answer. but, if you feel like someones suicidal thoughts are a threat, take action. if you are suicidal yourself, there are plenty of hotlines (quick google search) and people to talk to. i myself am more than willing to listen and talk you through it.

the in-game chat really isn’t the place for such talk, at least in my opinion. it’s distracting and honestly, a bit silly. it’s better to pm a friend or call a hotline or talk to someone else that isn’t the global chat. yes sometimes it cannot be “controlled” i get it but that does not make this point any less irrelevant imo

Almost no one is suggesting (other than the OP) that people who talk about depression in game should get kicked or muted. Imo that should only happen if its occurring constantly, where it could be considered spam.

Both of which are completely different subjects than depression.

A lot of people who are depressed don't have anyone close who they're comfortable having a conversation with. Some people just need empathy, and sometimes random strangers on the internet are the only people someone has to speak to because no-one else will care.

When I went through depression, both times I didn't find professional help nearly as useful as just speaking to people who cared. Sure, it helped, but there was always that thought in the back of my mind that kept telling me that these people are paid to act like they care. It was the people who I thought genuinely did care that helped. And if, for some people, that's random people on the internet, so be it.

There's nothing wrong with that, I'm saying that in chat most people are not going to be very sympathetic to your problem because its Minecraft chat. People play CTF either because they want to have fun or are particularly desperate. Getting targeted by Recovs is punishment enough without having the chat flooded with someone's sadness -- regardless of if they have an actual issue or not

I don't have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is when people are constantly forcing their problem onto everyone else, not just one time but many times.

I feel that a lot of individuals with these issues and without use games in general as a way to decompress, hence a lot of emotion can be brought intentionally or unintentionally. Sometimes these outbreaks in chat can be a silent cry for help, other times for attention, yeah, I believe like anything, there should be a limit, but punishing someone for this is rediculous.

Surely you understand that brawl is a business, and having someone's experience on Brawl disrupted by someone else spamming depression and suicide messages would be bad for business? I assure you I'm not the only one who feels uncomfortable or irritated by someone making a scene, when there's nothing wrong. Again, every suicide comment should be taken seriously, and dealt with in private conversations. If the all chat is what they need to get someone's help, fine so be it. But continual spam of this, or any dark topic should not be allowed because yes, it hinders my quality minecraft experience.

gonna quote some stuff I think I can agree with and will afterwards extend with some of my other thoughts.

Yes, I know it isn't the best way to start off my own thoughts, but I'd just like to say a few things beforehand.

I myself have luckily never struggled with depression. I've never really talked in-depth to someone who had.
As far as suicidal thoughts are considered, I know two people IRL who ended their own life, both not closley related to me, but close enough so that I can say what I say now: Both of them never mentioned suicide towards their family or friends. When they suicided, it came as quite a huge surprise to everyone.

Most people with serious issues don't make them public as Spades said. This certainly doesn't mean that there aren't people who do. As it should've been clear through the things I quoted, we indeed should help people with their issues, but not through global chat.
Ingame chat can't be used to seriously discuss things and will inevitably annoy others if things like politics are discussed in chat (heck, I'm guilty of that too, I admit).
Difference between politics and depression is, that, yes, both are often annoying if talked about in chat, and both can lead to people actually getting interested in it. While with politics, this normally stays on a level of interest, people maybe researching something and engaging in political discussion (sure if there are people bringing up, let's say gay marriage and say something like "god doesn't want them to/that's not normal/being gay is being sick" that's another story). Depression is kinda different. The first thought probably won't be, "oh I think I'm gonna research this health issue". No, most kids will probably think "might it affect me too?" because they see people talking about feeling down and being alone and they experienced being alone and feeling down once.
What happens? They'll eventually not google what depression is exactly (and even if they did, they probably don't understand wikipedia, I don't think I even fully do) but google "do I have depression?/depression test?" instead of going to see a doctor or psychotherapist.
What happens? They've seen others talking about depression, have been alone too, probably are feeling down this very moment... They obviously take an online test, because, yeah, realistically, who goes to the doctor and gets a proper diagnosis?
We all know how unreliable most online tests are. Combined with a child just answering in their 'down phase'...
(little off-topic here: when I'm feeling down, I almost want myself to be suffering from depression, always think this is a nifty explanation for many things then, why my life's bad and stuff, but dunno if that's just me) I just did an online test before writing this, just to see how I would've done two weeks ago during exams, so answering how I felt two weeks ago. Result: the site told me I could be 'severely depressed'.
Depression isn't just feeling down for a day or two, or, well, a week or two. Depression is something else.
And I think that's exactly the problem here, most people who talk about depression IG weren't diagnosed. They just thought they showed symptoms so they have it. And exactly this leads to the thing, to this loop. Confirmation bias.

@SnowCool21 I can understand some of the criticism you brought up, but honestly, saying that redboo &co. have no idea and are insensitive etc. is bull****. I think all of us here can all agree that depression is definitely a mental health issue which should definitely be taken seriously.
The thing is that many people bringing up depression IG probably weren't properly diagnosed as depressed.
Yes, depression is a huge problem in nowadays society and also children or teens can suffer from it. That does mean that anyone mentioning depression or depression-like issues should definitely be taken serious. But, as redboo originally stated, brawl isn't a group therapy session, we can point to other ways to help, we can maybe talk in private, but talking about depression in global chat only leads to this loop and makes more people think it might affect them and take pretty much worthless online tests.

so, actions which should be taken? talk personally to them, don't over-expose depression IG, but don't make it necessarily kickable etc. unless it's been 'proven' that this person just brings it up no matter what despite the fact that you tried helping them multiple times and told them to talk to others personally and not through global chat and them probably not having depression.

Oh, so you're going to resort to dismissing my points by stating I am not conscious of what I'm saying? Aight cool, keep it up with the arrogance.

I don't know about you, but no one who I know of has bought this game has done so to deal with people's personal problems. They did it to entertain themselves with the game and enjoy it. It may be insensitive but that's life, people who don't know you won't give a toss about you or your personal problems, especially when all they want to do is just have fun and play the game. Most people won't prioritize other people's problems over their experience and that's reality.

I will agree with you that generally speaking to people in game is more comforting to a depressed person as it would require them less energy to express their feelings. Nevertheless, they wouldn't be so energetic to constantly seek attention from an entire chat to tender to their own issues. Mentioning your problems once or twice okay, but consistently doing it is seeking attention, which is what this thread is criticising, because majority of people who say they are depressed are just sad for a week or had a hard time through their life or refuse to go out (no **** you're going to display symptoms of depression if you never do anything other than sit in front of a screen) and then after a while they're fine again.

Truly depressed people are few and far between but no one is saying they shouldn't be heard out, they should be encouraged 100% to seek help but for the most part people who openly talk about being "depressed" have just had a period in their life that put them off for a bit

@SnowCool21 i think you misunderstood the kinda people this thread is about. its about people who repeatedly say stuff that is essentially bashing on themselves and stuff that garners some sort of response for the sake of attention normally. e.g. someone coming on ctf and saying "my life is so **** and im gonna kill myself and everyone hates me" is different to someone coming on ctf and saying something like "i am really struggling and need help". you see the former quite often but very rarely see the latter said in ctf chat.

redboo is talking about people who almost seem to trivialise depression and mental illness by talking about it completely openly in the same chats that people have stupid toxic arguments about ctf. its a serious issue and needs a serious time/place to talk about it, not in /a chat on ctf. people with depression ideally go and see therapists and talk on a one to one basis, they dont go out in public and speak really loud about it.

if the person really is struggling and does still talk about it in /a then someone needs to pull them aside and help them privately. if they continue to talk about it in /a even after that then they are the kinda people redboo is on about.

that isnt just to socool but also to anyone else who attacked redboo because you misunderstood. redboo is a good guy even though he trolls a lot and i know he wouldnt write this to hate on genuinely depressed people

100% directed towards me and I guarantee it.

and honestly, he's not wrong. Bit of an embarrassment to myself

    EDIT:
    yep yep looooooool

I fully support @redboo123 on this.

In fact, I support him to the point of saying I think death threats should be something that is legal to some extent. It is people like me who cause everyone to feel like they're "doing something wrong" and makes human rights look like a complete ****ing joke. Instead of being the adult and going to get help, these people beg for attention in what I like to call "cries for help." There is actually a scientific term for this. It's called natural selection. It's how nature works. Picture a colony of dear running from a predator, well the retarded and deformed ones will either do something like turn around or get distracted by something (ADHD and Autists), or be completely ****ing disabled leaving them helpless. Naturally, they'll die. Good, now that we only have a group of strong dear, they can now go forward and pro create to continue evolution. Sitting here helping all the depressed mother ****ers who aren't willing to help themselves is wasting time. It's 2018 people, global warming exists, Kim Jong Un exists, we don't have much time lol.

Here's an idea, how about we help the people who are willing to be adult and ask for help themselves. Those are the people society needs, they're independent, and can get **** done. Encourage those who don't consider the entire human race and only care for themselves to kill themselves. Yes, this includes me. I ****ing hate it when they ask me why I want to kill myself but then say some retarded phrase like "but life is worth living for" when they miss the entire point of how I'm just another failure that has no purpose but to drag the rest of society behind. I am not important to anyone, never was, never will be.

Is this selfish of me? Apparently to most it is. However, this flawed logic. It's beneficial for everyone, the entire society. **** maybe it'll prevent another illiterate **** from inventing something absolutely useless that ends up screwing with ecosystems 10 years later.

I would like to also put a disclaimer since some of you will probably think I'm joking here, I'm not. I have an entire ****ing google doc that's at least 25 pages long that is filled with notes on this topic.

I would like to thank my 2 parents for telling me that everything was going to be ok every 30 seconds while having autistic temper tantrums in my room screaming because they took my keyboard away from me when I was 5. Thank you for raising a failure that doesn't consider others and seek help when needed like a real adult would and should do.

Woah still don't agree with me? That last paragraph is ****ing proof of my points. Notice how I did the most childish thing ever and just blamed my own problems on other people?? I am excited to read the angry letters from all the lovely block girls and boys. As for I, I'll be enjoying the peace and quiet in the afterlife after doing the human race and entire world a favour.

Thank you for reading, have a great day.

The problem is, this is Minecraft. Who you want to categorize as adults, are usually children that play this game. They don't know *how* to ask for help, and usually if a child brings up this subject they are told that it's just a phase (one of my most mother ****ing hated words). They are trapped in a pain they do not understand nor can they explain, let alone get help. They have options, such as vent, bottle it up, or die. (The third being the most extreme, the second, leads to the third in my opinion, the first, taking that out on people, IRL online, ETC.). I disagree 100 percent with the natural selection comparison. My family has worked with drug addicts and people with mental issues, back in the past at our business, and some of these individuals have become so damaged that they are incapable of making a proper decision, even though they exude brilliance, they are forever trapped in a mental cage, that for some, really only needs an outside person to unlock for them. (There are obviously going to be those people you cannot save, but at least you know that you did the best yo can to help them).

This being said, there is a limit for everything. People that spam about other **** are annoying, same as people who would spam about this subject. However, punishing people for it, has drastic consequences.

I'm sorry your argument with children is not valid?? Colonel_Graff is 40 or something, you are nearly 20 yourself. Brandino is like 23 or something. Majority of the playerbase is teenagers. They're over the age of 12.

And what are these supposed "drastic consequences" you speak of? What would happen if someone who continually uses self deprecation and/or similar methods were permanently mute, or better yet flat out banned? It's not a punishment. It's a little hint to grow up and ask for help

Did I just read "death threats should be legal to a certain extent"?
Do you have ANY idea what a death threat can do to somebody?
