Thats the point, the tag does not work if it is not included in the original post.

Well I've tagged people before in my topic posts (which I assume would be the original post) but sometimes they don't get an alert for it. (sorry I'm a bit confused)

If you post something and then edit it, all tags you add to your post in that edit will not send out an alert.
