I've met tons of people via Skype. Every CTF team has it's own chat full of people who don't even have to be on the team. That's where you'll meet new people, if for some reason you didn't know everyone already. The CTF community is very tight knit, we may have tons of people but a lot of us know almost everyone; because of how effective it is to meet people.
It's hard trying to explain to outsiders, always is, but our system works.

A bit more proof if you need it, CTF teams in it's earliest days were ran by TS. Eventually a team however decided to go with Skype, and well, Skype ended up winning over everyone. Teams that used Skype lasted ~10 times longer and were more active than those who didn't.

And have TS running at all times? But on Skype you don't have to do that. You can even access your Skype pms from your phone if you're on the go, which a lot of people do.

We do not try to make you use Teamspeak for everything, we are just trying to tell you the advantages of Teamspeak. We also use skype for staff organization, but we mainly use Teamspeak for talking.

Before Brawl, Skype was my main way of communicating. It was simple, easy to use, and I could talk to my friends; however, I now feel Skype is becoming more than it's worth.

Don't get me wrong, both TS3 and Skype are great, but I, personally, prefer TS3 over Skype for a couple of reasons:
    • Like being a call host on Skype, as a channel creator, you're in control. Unlike Skype, TS3 allows you to assign ranks and mute channel participants if you wish to speak w/o being interrupted. This comes in handy for team leaders.
    • When Skyping, you can hear every little sound from the other participants mics. This could include fans, eating, or any other obnoxious noises coming from someone's background. With TS3, a members mic isn't activated unless a certain sound level is reached, minimizing the background noise you'll experience from others.
    • You don't have to worry about your channel admin lagging and crashing the whole channel on TS3. Even if the channel creator disconnects, the channel will remain created until all members of the channel have left. We have a reliable TS3 that you don't have to worry about randomly going down mid event.
    • With Skype, it's not easy to meet new people who enjoy playing the same games/servers as you. With TS3, you can make friends with just about anyone. This is also a great way to recruit people who are looking for a team to join.
Even though I prefer TS3, Skype has its benefits too.
    • You can create Skype groups that last forever, never expiring. This is good for teams who want to send messages to the entire team rather than those who are only on TS3.
    • Skype users can receive messages even when offline, so you don't have to worry about someone missing your message.
    • Skype is well know and easy to use without much knowledge of the application.
Like I said, both applications have their own characteristics that make them unique, so I'd say it's all down to preference. If you really wanted, you could have a Skype group that you used for team messages and announcements, and spend most of your time talking on TS3. Kind of the best of both worlds if you ask me

I agree with you points of course, my only argument here is that Skype is better for the CTF community, where almost all conversation is done via text. We rarely talk in casual games come to think of it... Just in matches and other special events. In-game chat has always sufficed otherwise as seen with out wide ranges of tactical chat commands.

For those looking to talk in casual games then yes I'd advocate for TS3. You can meet up with anyone else online at the time without have any connections with them. Much better for new people rather than Skype, which requires at least a few connections.

But here's a questions then. What if someone is offline and you want them to get on? In Skype you just send them a PM and they'll be able to respond from anywhere if they have their phone on them. With TS, there really is no way unless they have it running and logged in.

skype - chat to discuss General CTF stuff with your team.

teamspeak - communicate during events and collaborate with the community.

I used Skype because of the messaging. But now it's easy to communicate to teams through group conversations on Brawl :grinning: It took me two months to try out TS3 and I started liking it more.

i always have broken internet, so for that i hate skype for disconnecting me every 5 seconds in a call, also i think ts is more stable. but i agree with poaches. skype for chat and organizing, and ts for the actual match time.

My only issue with teamspeak is that it doesn't work well on mobile devices, as I mainly use my phone for this sort of stuff. Obviously skype is better for day to day use and texting, but teamspeak is better for actual voice communication.

I mean, the CTF community has always been using Skype. And it's really hard to change people's mind, almost impossible. I have an open mind and there's just something that's off putting about Teamspeak. This is coming from a former admin on another game. We used Teamspeak like our life depended on it, always relaying information between the admins. Then when I got into CTF, Skype is just a god send. It's so clean and very mobile friendly. When I'm on Skype, I'm using my iPhone and while teamspeak does have a iPhone app, it's very cumbersome and goofy. As long as we aren't forced to use Teamspeak while in Team Matches/Events, I think the community would just embrace Skype for the time being.

I have used both skype and teamspeak for 2 different servers and in my mind it boils down to this:

Skype is better for group chatting through messages.

Teamspeak is better for voice chatting.

I really strongly disagree with that. CTF teams rely on type chatting in chats and announcement chats. Skype offers the feature of extremely easy private groups, join links, speak permissions, and such. Sure, TS has some of those things, but skype is easier to use for most people. Also, the current system runs perfectly fine and is already created in Skype. It would be a pain to transfer it.

Both has its advantages. Teamspeak is a safe way to communicate without worrying about DDoSers while Skype is better for complete privacy.

I personally prefer Skype, simply due to the fact that it's P2P, so no reliance on a host other than your own, and for anyone who says that Skype is dangerous, it's called getting a proxy.
Ts3 has no proxy settings, so that actually really annoys me when i'm trying to SSH tunnel on everything, for more security.

Overally Skype is just more compatible with things, it supports IPv6, and while i'm not sure if Ts3 does I would doubt it.

    1. Not really... It all depends though.
    2. Agree.
    3. This one I'm sorta forced on, Skype would personally be much easier.
    4. On skype, you could have a permanent channel, that requires nothing but its creation.

Umm... then explain how I've met over 200 new people through Skype, even while keeping my Skype private...?

Whether it be nostalgia or me not wanting to change, I'd prefer skype over teamspeak any day. Also, to join a group call, you only have to be contacts with the host, not everybody else in it.

Skype better for chatting and one on one stuff. Teamspeak better for team stuff. Although, overall I prefer telepathy. It's way easier to use.

*doesn't care and uses own preference anyway because it's already been downloaded and been used for a long while*

I use both Skype and TS, but for different purposes.
Skype has some features close to a social network. It has a well-developed contact system and is overall more useful to stay in touch with people. I don't like the TS chat and you need to be in the same channel for group chats.
I use both for calls, TS for gaming since it is easier to organize group calls and the sound quality is far better, Skype with IRL friends since I don't have a TS server and we can have the cam on. One big advantage of TS is the mute hotkey, since my family tends to enter my room pretty often.
In the end, I think they are not really comparable, but for a call, I prefer TS.

Those ex-mods from MCPvP trying to get mod back will NEED to use Teamspeak3.

Whatever official stuff can be done on teamspeak should be done on teamspeak, so that it fits with the rest of the server network. I haven't used teamspeak very often so I don't know if it would work for all the stuff we did on skype, but we should definitely try. Individual teams can communicate however they want though, it doesn't really matter there.

You can do this in skype as well with push to talk (press mute once to invert it and get push to mute).
