Book Capture and Recovery, Chapter 5: A Time of Mourning

So school has been a jerk lately. I've been at college from 8am to 10pm most days, so that's one of the main reasons I've not done this as promised. It's also partly that I've run into a type of writer's block. However, I'm back at it again. It's a long weekend for me, no homework, and tons of ctf ahead of us all. Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 are on their respective numbers. And now, enjoy chapter 5, a time for mourning.

Chapter 5
[P.O.V. Daniel]
After the first arrow​

I ran as fast as I could to the leader's tent, but stopped just outside. Adam was walking back from the mess hall with​

a plate of food. I ran up to him instead and shook his shoulders, causing him to drop his dinner. He stared down at it and slightly pouted.

"Aw man, Daniel. That looked really delicious too..." He glanced up at me and tilted his head when he noticed my​

expression. "What's wrong?" I shook my head to clear it.

"We're under attack, Adam! The blue team want their flag back! Can you alert everyone? I'm going to go get CAP​

together. We'll be the front line. I don't want innocent people dying." Adam nodded his head and I turned to go. A hand fell on my shoulder and I looked back. Adam was standing there with a grim look on his face.

"We've been through a lot together. Make sure you live to fight alongside me again." I laughed, shaking his hand off​

my shoulder.

"Shouldn't I be worrying about you? I'm the medic here!" Adam chuckled.
"I suppose so. Just be careful out there." I gave a thumbs up and ran off. There were people that needed me! I ran​

off towards Cyber's tent first. She was polishing her diamond armor, but paused when I rushed in. She appeared to know exactly what had happened because she nodded and pulled her armor on before following me out into the clearing. That was when I noticed Pookey facing off against a pyro. He was holding his own fairly well, but I could see by his bag that he was running out of elements. I turned to Cyber.

"I need you to tell the other CAPers what's going on! I'm going to help Pookey." Without waiting for a response I​

turned on my heels and raced into the battle. I ran over and tapped him twice with my sword. There was a flash of light and his bag seemed to grow a little bulkier. Pookey paused momentarily as the shiver went down his spine. Looking into his pack, he found another water element and smiled up at me before turning back to his opponent. by this point our teammates were arriving; and so were the enemy. I dodged a swing from a diamond sword and watched as their heavy raised another blow. It was caught by Cyber with her sword, though, and there was a resounding clang! She looked over at me and mouthed the words 'Go!'. I understood perfectly and hit her to heal her a little. As I ran around the outskirts of the fray, healing my teammates and trapping my enemy I was suddenly stopped by a toxic spill exploding at my feet. My gold armor began to melt away, causing my feet to begin burning. I gasped at the pain and looked up at a chemist towering above me. He had another damage potion raised and threw it just as I dodged out of the way. My regeneration was beginning to do its work by this point and my feet slowly stopped their burning. I risked a tiny smug at the chemist and threw a web net at his face, temporarily slowing him. Pulling my sword out from its sheath, I pushed the chemist out of my way and darted towards the center of the fight for more people to heal. It was going to be a gruesome day.

Before the second wave​

The heat was sweltering and moisture glistened on my hands as I set another arrow in my bow and took aim. Of​

course I was up against LordChaos. He was renowned as the "best archer", but I was about to take him down a peg or two. I let another shot loose and dodged out of the way just as an arrow was returned to me. How nice... I glanced down at the floor below me and saw one of Chaos's headshots make its mark once again. I cursed inwardly. He needed to be taken down fast. I squinted past our encampment into the thick foliage where he was and gasped as I saw a glint heading my way. I sidestepped, but not fast enough because I felt the familiar sting as his arrow sliced across my arm. I staggered and grabbed for my now limp arm, dropping my bow in the process. Another flicker of movement caught my eye and I rolled to the side, almost falling off the roof in the process. Pain surged up my arm and as I lay there I saw Daniel running below me.

"Daniel help!" I called, stretching my hand out for him. He stopped in his tracks and turned, looking around for who​

called. He spotted me and climbed up the ladder used to get onto the roof. Pulling out his sword, he swung, hitting me right in the wound. There was a tingling sensation and a wave rushed up my arm, reaching my shoulder and spreading throughout my body. I smiled weakly and stood up, staggering along the way.

"Thanks man." I said, grabbing my bow up off the roof and loading another arrow.
"It's no problem, man. Happy I could-" Daniel stopped, almost as if he has lost his train of thought. I gasped, but it​

was carried away by the wind. Daniel stumbled, his feet collapsing underneath him, and tumbled towards the edge of the roof. I rushed forward, trying to grab him, but before I could reach him he had rolled off. I sat there staring at his lifeless body on the ground; an arrow sticking out of the back of his head. Tears welled up and I screamed. I could've sworn the fighting stopped for a split second as everyone heard my mourning. Adam ran over, but stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the golden armor. He dropped to his knees next to Daniel, bowing his head and clenching his fists. I readied another arrow and shot in the direction Chaos had sniped from. My tears blurred my vision slightly, but this was personal now and I was far past logical reasoning.

"Daniel how could you?! You promised me you'd be careful!" I heard Adam through my fury and the tears fell faster​

than ever. "We were supposed to fight together... remember that one time I got stuck in a wall and you had to bash me with your sword until I fell out? Good times..." I wiped my eyes to clear the tears and set another arrow in. My mind was set and my intentions were decided. I aimed through the leaves. In the background I could still hear Adam crying.

After the second wave​

The clink of steel on steel, the rush of an arrow flying through the air, the strong smell of spells going off; those​

weren't for me. I stuck to the shadows, popping out occasionally to land a single, fatal blow, before slinking back into hiding. It was dangerous work, but not for someone as skilled as me. This was no problem! After the second group went in, I was told by Ducksfan to take out as many enemies as possible before meeting back up with them. There was no place to hide when I was around. I saw a group of mages attempting to take down Latias, but they were new recruits; easy pickings for someone like him. I thought about going in to help, but then a flicker of movement at the edge of my vision caught my eye. Perfect; a soldier! I stepped out, dusting myself with a fine redstone powder and raising my dagger up high. Using a pile of sugar, I dumped it into my mouth, giving me the energy rush I needed. Then I ran. I ran full tilt at this smug looking soldier attempting to flank Latias. No one was going to escape me! I reached him from behind and struck downwards. Just at the last moment, though, he turned and blocked, catching my assassinate and rendering it completely void. The impact shook the dust off and I felt the power in my legs weaken. I stumbled, but caught myself.

"It's gonna take more than that, bud." I heard the bloke say. I chuckled.
"We'll see about that!" I yelled, moving forward, still on my sugar rush. He was caught off guard and jumped off the​

roof, landing on the ground as if he had jumped off the bottom step on a flight of stairs. I rolled my eyes. "You must think that's so cool." He stood up and smiled back up at me, making me cringe.

"Why do you think they call me SoCool? That's my name. Don't wear it out!" I growled and jumped off the roof,​

landing awkwardly and causing pain to sear up my leg. Thankfully the sugar hadn't had run out yet and I could forget the sprain. I threw myself at him and he turned tail to dart down the narrow alley behind him. I gave chase, relishing in the thrill of this game of tag. He pulled out his sword and turned to the right, digging the point into the wall and launching himself up the side to land on the roof again. He took a moment to relax and glance down.

"Having difficulties there, friend?" He laughed and I smiled, pulling out another pile of sugar and using it to give me​

an extra boost of speed. I ran up the side of the wall and grabbed onto the edge of the roof, using it to pull myself up. I looked up and took great pleasure in seeing his smile disappear. He ran along the roof with me in hot pursuit. Up here I had the advantage and I was closing the distance on him. Suddenly I heard a noise to my right and the soldier jumped off the roof again. I sighed and followed suit, only to land in the middle of him and a chemist. I rolled to the side as a swing from the soldier's sword hit where I was a second ago. Darting around in circles, still on my energy boost, I grabbed a pile of redstone dust from my pocket. It had been long enough and I was ready to try again. Another swing made me have to drop it, though. I cursed under my breath and thought of an idea. Ducking and weaving, I made my way around behind the chemist, who was much slower than the soldier. Pulling out my dagger, I landed it in his side and stepped back to admire my work. He stumbled and fell, causing his teammate to come to his rescue. He picked him up and wall climbed onto the roof. I turned to walk away and made it a couple steps before I felt something hit my shoulder. It took a moment for me to register what had happened, but when I did the pain came. It surged all over my body, causing me to lose my breath from the sheer magnitude of it. I turned slowly and saw the soldier with his sword raised, blood dripping from his blade.

"Looks like our game of tag is over, friend." I went for my pocket again, hoping to find some more sugar, but to no​

avail. The sword came down, but I didn't feel it. I know it connected, but I was disconnecting from the world. Sparks flew across my vision and I fell. I looked up and saw him put his sword away. He appeared to be laughing, but I couldn't hear him. Then he turned and wall climbed back up to the chemist. He reached into his pocket and found a vial of something. The chemist drank it and appeared to be getting better, but my vision was going dark, so I couldn't be sure. I thought I saw the chemist and soldier get up and run towards Latias. I struggled for a footing, but I couldn't feel anything anymore. That thrill, that rush, that wasn't for me anymore. Now I wanted sleep, so I closed my eyes and slept.

[P.O.V. Ducksfan]
During the third wave​

"Where is K_O? He should be back by now..." I asked quietly, more to myself than anyone else. I looked over at​

her to see how she was doing. She was sitting in the grass with a blank stare on her face. I felt a note of pity strike my heartstrings when I saw her and walked over to kneel next to her.

"We're moving out now. I'm sure he'll meet up with us when he can, but we need to get going before CAP gets​

organized." I looked at her expression and wasn't sure if she had heard me. I shook her shoulders lightly and she flinched, looking up at me.

"Huh? Yea, sure. Let's go." She stood up and I noticed she was trembling. She'd never been on the field before. I​

began to pull my sword out, but hesitated and put it back away.

"we'll stick to the outskirts of the camp and try to maintain an element of surprise. If someone sees us we're not​

going to fight. We'll split up and run to the flag tent to meet back up." She nodded again and appeared to stop shaking slightly. I breathed a sigh of relief and slunk into the camp with her close behind. Thankfully there was a massive fight going on right inside that enabled us to sneak in unnoticed. Looking behind me I saw Birdgirl stopped and staring at the bodies scattered around. I grabbed her hand and pulled her with me as I led us towards the edge of the camp. I stopped when I saw two people heading our way and pushed Birdgirl behind some barrels next to a tent. She looked out and gasped when she recognized who it was. I motioned for her to be quiet and the two people moved on into the forest. Birdgirl was shaking furiously now.

"what's wrong Birdgirl? Who was that?" I asked quietly. She shook her head violently and I held her shoulders to​

steady her.

"That was Unifier. We were childhood friends..." She looked up into my face with tears in her eyes. "Why is he here,​

Ducksfan? We used to play cops and robbers together all the time. He can't be a part of CAP. He just can't be!" I pulled her into a hug and she sobbed silently into my armor. After a while she calmed down and I pulled away.

"We better get moving. They're counting on us." I helped her to her feet and we continued moving out. Her eyes​

kept darting into the forest, though, and I grabbed her hand again to lead her. We finally made it to the tent and ran in. Inside was a single ninja; the ninja that had stolen the flag once before. I growled and lunged at him. He turned to avoid it and slashed my arm, cutting through my armor with his sharp sword. I bit back a scream and felt a shiver as Birdgirl rushed up with her sword. She threw a web net at the ninja's feet, catching him fast. He struggled to get free, but not before my sword point was at his throat. I stopped just before breaking skin and he gulped slightly.

"Thanks Birdgirl, now get the flag!" I could hear her run off and search the tent as I kept my eyes on the guardian.​

He was doing his best to remain composed, but I had him at an awkward angle and he was struggling to remain standing.

"You won't find it." Were his words. I was taken aback and he took the moment to reach for his sword and knock​

mine to the ground. I regained my balance and grabbed for my sword, bringing it back up before he had a chance to cut away at the web net engulfing his feet.

"Nice try. Now drop the weapon." I said grimly. He shrugged and let the sword drop to the floor. I kept my sword​

point centered on his throat and thought about what he had said. We wouldn't find the flag? Suddenly I heard Birdgirl from across the room,

"Ducksfan, the flag isn't here!" I gasped and the ninja smiled slightly. Growing furious, I dropped my sword and​

jumped towards the ninja, grabbing the front of his shirt and shaking him violently.

"Where. Is. It?!" I screamed at him. He remained silent and I punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
"Ducksfan!" I heard Birdgirl say in the background, but I didn't listen. I kicked him in the stomach and he writhed​

on the floor in pain. Still he didn't speak. "Ducksfan stop!" Birdgirl was behind me now, pulling me away from him. I looked down at the silent protector; the silent ninja that was causing lives to be lost in vain.

"Do you realize how many people are going to die because of this?" I yelled, almost in tears. "Where is the flag,​

CAPer!" He looked up at me and spit out blood.

"The flag's gone to ClockTower." A wave hit me, almost knocking me off my feet as well. I could slightly feel Birdgirl​

hugging me and trembling.

K_O's part was causing me a lot of issue because I didn't know much about him. I thank everyone who helped me realize his character and get me back into writing this. There will be two more chapters and then that's it. I'd hate to drag it on for longer than is necessary, but I hope you guys enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. It's been an honor and I'm going to get going straight away into writing chapter 6. Thankfully I know exactly how I would like the next two chapters to go, so expect them a lot sooner than the last two. xD In any case guys, I'm out for now. Thanks for reading!
